Instrument Cluster Help

Hey all,
I went out to drive my 72' F100 last night and when I turned on my lights i noticed the temp gauge and oil pressure gauge bulbs were burnt out. I am away at college and don't have access to tools to pull the bulbs but I am going home for spring break in about 2 weeks. Does anyone know where I can buy a new set of bulbs? (either online or in stores, I kinda wanted to see if i could replace them with LED bulbs) I would rather order them online and have them waiting for me at home rather than trying to struggle to find them if they are no available in stores. Also, is there any special way to take out the instrument cluster? This will be my first time doing this I am sure it isn't too difficult.

Thanks for all the help!

Any auto parts store should have bulb industry #1895.

Appears to be 7 (shown as 13466 in upper pic). But not all will be the same.

LED's can be a real pain in the azz with having to use resistor as a load to help balance the current draw.

Here say that the Led's when used in dash lights is a fixed brightest that is not adjustable with the head light switch to dim if to bright!

Do some research before buying them.

In my 70, I have 5 bulbs. I replaced them with these....

Cutequeen 10PCS LED Car Lights Bulb White T10 2835 4-SMD 80 Lumens 194 168 (pack of 10) May have to cut and paste

They are a nice clear white light, not too overpowering, but cannot be dimmed.I can finally see my speedo and gauges at night.

I have done the alternator upgrade, not sure if you have, or if it would make a difference.

For the instrument cluster, there are just 8 or 10 phillips screws around the outside of the bezel, pretty easy to remove.

If you use the LED's I posted, and perhaps any LED, if at first they do not work, try removing the socket from the cluster and turning it 180 degrees and reinsert, then it should work, if everything else is working fine.

Hope this helps.

x2 on the alternator upgrade. After the 3G my grand marquis bulbs are so bright you would think they are LED. I like the look of the stock lights so if I did go LED I would try and get a warm color (2200 - 2700k).

I replaced my stock lights with leds from superbrightleds.com. you need two green ones(for the turn arrows) one red one (for the high beam indicator) and 4 white or warm white ones. I didn't put in the resistors because the rear incandesent lights(tail lights) add enough resistance to keep the lights from flashing too fast. If I ever change out the rear lights I'll just exchange the flasher unit with an electronic one, then no need for any resistors.

I installed front & rear Led's a long with the electronic two of Led flashers, still had bleed over to the other side of the vehicle lights. So added the resistor on all four corners where the Led's were added an this also helped with bleed over.

But now noticed after adding one of the electronic flashers that my cruise control has now stopped working. So put back the oem flasher an put up with the faster blinking.

I still get some voltage bleed over when using the blinkers until, I turn on the head lights that correct the bleed over problem.

What a pain in the azz to run Led's, I did not install any in the dash as, I do like to set the brightness of the dash lights.

Thanks for all the help. I ended up ordering 4 White LEDs for the gauges from superbrightleds.com, very easy website to navigate. Given the blinkers and high-beam in dash bulbs aren't constantly on I will more than likely keep those regular bulbs. Those LEDs can get expensive!

As Bill mentioned above, Ford lists the standard bulb as being a Industry number 1895. which are 2 candlepower. Scott drake has this set for an old Mustang that also takes 1895's.

1895 gets used a lot. Some trucks use a passle of 1895, but a lone #53 bulb for oil pressure warning light though, at half the wattage. Any particular reason why they did that? An 1895 will work iirc.

You are correct. No I don't know why. My 64/72 slide does show 64/68 F series taking the #53 there. And you are right on the candlepower also. They are 1 candlepower.

Huh. Thanks for the confirmation, "it's a mystery". Maybe it's more responsive to low oil pressure? They had to have a reason I'm thinkin'.. sumthin'.

What chart are you lookin' at?
Mine says 1966/69: 53 / 1969/72: 1445 (1.5 candlepower).

1895 bulb has 2 candlepower and could be subbed for 53 and 1445.
