Are 77 Explorers (2x4, 460) very rare?

I am just wondering how rare are 1977 Explorers (longbed) with the 460, AC, C6, 2x4, white? All I know is I have one and rarely see any old Explorers. Thanks

In all my years around Ford Vehicles,I have never ever seen a breakdown of what you're asking.
Usually the vehicle breakdown info is:
Reg cab 4x4,2x4
Super cab 4x4,2x4

If you really want to know, contact ford and see if they will send you something.
There is One book out there, available at the on-line store here about the history of the ford truck.
Maybe buy it and see what it says about productions numbers.

I'm not sure if your truck is rare or not. I have a 1979 F-100 "Explorer" 2wd. It came with a 302 and I believe FMX transmission. It still has the 302 but a c-4 tranny instead of the FMX. My Explorer model had fancy stickers running down the side of the truck and "Explorer" emblems on the bedsides toward the rear. It also had a hood ornament that said "Explorer". I also think the interior was given a little different treatment also. I have some woodgrain trim on the glove box and woodgrain stickers surrounding the gauges on the dash panel. It also has this god awful plaid looking seat! I would assume your explorer with the 460 might be on the rare side since I haven't seen an explorer with one yet, mostly just 302's.

What is the fifth digit in the VIN? It will be an "A" if it came out with a 460 I think.

I have a 1976 F100 Explorer 2X4. It came with a 2V 360. It now has a 4V 428. I have been told that the only reason it has Explorer on it is because of the trim level on it. Ford did identify trucks by the trim level in the description. That is why there are words like Ranger, Explorer, etc... on the nameplates mounted on them. If you were to have been shopping to purchase one of these trucks back then you would have been offered them by those names by the dealerships. They even had large banners saying things like " New Explorers" and "New Rangers" "Available Now".

You certainly don't purchase driveline, suspension and other parts by using the trim level nameplate. Still they were used when being sold new, so I use mine when I describe my truck to people. It kind of falls into the Mustang description category doesn't it?

I've owned a 79 Custom with the 460 and Explorer package. It had carpet, p/s, p/b, tilt, dual tanks, slider, chrome grill inserts and headlight doors and that lovely plaid seat. I have seen a fair number of explorers with different engine options but all were based on the Custom trim level trucks (ie- no chrome and loud stickers). On the list there's a couple of guys with this package installed on Rangers. As it was basically a promotional deal( ie top line option package available on the lower level trucks) I find it kind of redundant to put on the high level trucks. I know a guy who's been a Ford truck salesman since the sixties; guess I'll have to ask him if he recalls anything about it.
