We have taken the Excursion from North Carolina to the California Coast and are on our way back camper in tow the whole way..

Left Tucson this morning for Carlsbad, didn't make it out of Arizona when the CEL came on, also noticed it was blowing black smoke. I pulled into a small town, pulled out my laptop and Forscan, said EGR code and Crankshaft position sensor. Only store was an Autozone and I bought a crankshaft position sensor. After struggling to install it in the parking lot we were back on the road. Almost 7 hrs later we pulled into our campsite, pulled passes and towed fast, no CEL but it is rolling coal on acceleration.

I have checked and repositioned the hot site boots, no codes after driving but it does feel a little low on power from a stop.

Any advice on what else to look at? I am thinking I need to clean the EGR but that code has not returned.

 

What were the code numbers (especially the EGR code number)?

Make sure the connection is good on the VGT solenoid.

Post MAP. Baro, and EBO with KOEO.
Also - check condition of MAP sensor hose (cracks, tears, or plugged).
Might as well look for soot at exhaust connections and oil at CAC connections.

 

Yeah, code numbers would be most helpful. Never good to have these issues when on trips and especially when towing so rooting for you here

 

P0401-e0 and P0336 were the stored codes, both are gone after I unhooked the batteries to remove the battery cable for the crank sensor access.

 

The CKP does not go bad very often. Most times it is the connector or a chafed wire (P0336 is a circuit code). Hope you got it though!

P0401 (a flow code) is most commonly a stuck EGR valve, but it can also be a bad EBP sensor (or a boost leak or even a stuck turbo). You might try running w/ your EBP sensor unplugged as a test.

Still would like to see the data requested, assuming you still want/need the help.

When starting out I blow black smoke, and she hesitates but once going she does fine, pulls 8% grades etc as she normally does, on flat highways I can pull at 70-75 no problem, no excess fuel consumption. Before I replaced the crank sensor I was blowing black smoke on grades. We have been at 6000 feet + for a couple of weeks, now we are a little lower in elevation. I also changed the oil 2 days ago, 5w-40 Delo, Ford filter and no additives. Oil is at level so not burning it. Coolant is at level.

Also, Ford dealer replaced all injectors in November along with stand pipes and dummy plugs

My biggest fear is breaking down in the desert, just trying to make sure we get home safe on Sunday.

 

Could be the boot. There is a bit of oil around it.

Were your posted readings at idle of KOEO?

Wasn't sure why the desired EBP would be a few (3.3) psi gauge. I guess I haven't paid much attention to the desired number at KOEO. Doesn't really mean anything at KOEO.

Anyway, the EBP sensor is about a half of a psi high. That is "officially" within acceptable difference, but frankly it is a bit more than I like to see.

I'm still thinking a CAC leak. But would also like to know if performance improves any with the EBP unplugged.

 

I ordered a new boot from Oreillys, be at the store this afternoon.

I will check the EBP sensor then too, going to pick up some trimmer string.

VGT wiring and connector look good.

Should I clean the EGR?

 

Probably should, but I hate that job (don't know why except sometimes it doesn't want to come out, lol).

Maybe wait on cleaning the EGR valve until you do the other stuff and check to see if those things resolved it.

Going to pick it up too along with EGR O Rings

 

Parts are due in this afternoon, we are going to go to the caverns this morning,
