then I just bouhgt a 72 Explorer,,with a 79 351w /fmx for 150 bucks. It has an 8 foot bed and big rims,,15x8 with 265/60/15 tires. It's painted Dk. red, but inside the cab is gold. Original color I think. There is no bodyside mldg's or wheelwell mldg's or stainless mldg's around the front and back windows. It also has only rubber mats. If it was'nt for the Explorer emblems on the bed it would look like a base model. I bought it for a parts truck for my 67 Ranger ,but it's in 10 times better shape so now the 67's the parts truck. Today I pulled the trans out and tomorro hope to get my spare in. The old one only has forwards in all gears no matter where the gear selector is. The 72 has no power strg. or brakes and no A/C. It's very straight bodywise with some minor rust. Im tickeled pink though for a 150$,, Hope to be cruisin by next weekend. Good luck with yours thenkel2 and happy new years AL.
dude! you say your explorer was gold? what is the paint code on it? is the inside slightly or lean toward yellow in color? I have been hunting for the proper color of mine for a long time and have yet to come up with the right one. my paint code just says 4 whats yours?
Hey ,Billy just went outside ta check the #'s on the door of the 72, man it's gettin cold outside! Serial #'s read like this,, WB 131,Color-R8 ,Model-F103,Body-8 4,Trans-G,Axle-17,Maxgwv-5000,Cert HP-165,ppm-4000,DSO-22,Made in Canada-04-22. I don't know what color gold you would call it but the inside roof of the cab{it looks the best}is darn attractive !! The red metallic it's very faded, with no clear coat--I bet the original gold coulda used a clear coat,, you know those 70's Ford's with flaking mrtallic paintjobs.
your right about that gold it looks very good, not many people like it, its not a common color ya see everyday. but I think its sweet.
thanks for the code I will check it out, everytime I look up mine the books and places I ask always come up with some gross green color. and the golds they show are not the same.
the Explorers are not as common as the rangers and others so I think they are kindof special, and besides what other ford truck has the cool emblem on the hood?
your right about it gettin' cold out theere, try ta keep warm!
Hello, I just regestered and was looking at this info. I have a 1971 F100 Sports Custom Explorer. It was made with Ca. emmissions and has factory A/C.Also it has PB,PS,and AUTO. 302CI, SS West coast Mirriors all the chrome and the color is Anti-Established Mint. I have had this truck since 1992. It runs great and with a new paint job it looks good. I've been working on the A/C, and have had a tough time with it. This is a topic all along, but I glad to find that ther was others out there that know about the Explorer. I thought some one had just added the Emblem to it. Thanks
I have a 1971 F-100 and was surprised to find it was originally gold. It looks factory new because it looks like it was originally taped over for a repair or repaint and left covered for years. The decal on the driver's door jamb looks factory new too.
So, I am sure what the color use to be. The color looks a bit richer (lighter) than the gold on the old Trans Am cars. If you remember that color. If I had a digital camera I would take a picture. What I can do is take a regular photo and scan it once i get the roll developed.
