Someone invented these devices called "trailers" and even funnier things called "receiver hitches" to go along with 5th wheels and goosenecks.
With that "logic", one-ton and heavier chassis cabs don't see any kind of heavy duty use either.
(If you were just joking, I take that stuff back, though...I hope you were joking.)
They also invented this thing called a "long bed" for people that don't want to go buy a trailer, store it, then tow it around when they need to haul stuff. I'm sure construction crews want to be hauling around a trailer with them on the job site.
Not all trailers are used for that purpose. Many people buy things called 5th wheels that they live out of for many months a year. For them a short bed dually works better. Not everyone wants a LB, if cornering or backing are a concern for your 5th wheel you can always use a slider hitch for your SB truck. Just cuz you don't like it doesn't mean that it doesn't have a legitimate purpose for many people.
I've got an 05 f150 screw short bed, and I love it. No complaints, it's got plenty of room in the bed for me, just due to its depth, it kind of makes up for its shortness unlike chevy and doge.
As usual, you have to weigh the options of both and decide for yourself what you want to spend your money on. I think the dodge is hideous, but then I think that the new ford and chevy are equally hideous. I am picky though. I like my 56 F100 really well, I like my 72 F100 really Well, and I like my 95 F150 really well. But if I was going to buy a 3/4 ton it would have to be a diesel. And for me there is only one real option, That is the Dodge Cummins. That is not to infer that the psd is crap, The cummins is simply my preference. Regardless of how the new one looks.
I agree with you Nick. It will be interesting to see if Dodge increases there sales. Nothings worked yet. As usual though the build quality is not up to Ford standards by far. Yeh the front ends on the Dodges get worse looking all the time.
Any facts to back up any of that? Dodge hasn't made a regular crew cab truck ever. The quad cab that they introduced back in 98 I believe changed the industry as the 94 ram did before that, then they came out in 02 with the quad cab with the forward hinged doors that was a big success. This is just another chance they are taking-crew cabs are huge now as they market for them has increased dramatically- 5% to 40% in sales. In typical Dodge style, they are "overdoing" it to attract buyers they're way-its always worked for Dodge and I bet it will work this time. Especially seeing as the 1500 MEGA CAB is actually a 2500 series truck with 1500 badges on it. Only difference in the MEGA CABS is that the 2500 has the option of a 6 speed and diesel options.

If the Mega Cab catches on, they will all do it. If you have ever noticed, Chrysler leads in many areas and others follow. Who invented the mini-van, affordable muscle car (Road Runner-plain jane with hugh motor), reintroduced the convertible, the affordable turbocharger, affordable american front wheel drive (Omni-Horizon), etc. If you go back far enough, I think they had an impact on hydraulic brakes and electric starting on average passenger cars.
Will dodge be offering a dually with the megacab??? just wondering because it took a while before they offered it when they went to there current configuration (correct me if I'm wrong).
Actually, Dodge was the first American truck manufacturer to make a crew cab...ever. I don't remember the exact year off the top of my head, I believe it was in the early sixties. Anyway, the used another set of regular cab front doors right behind the front doors (if that makes any sense) They really looked hideous because the leading edge of the back doors didn't go straight up like on modern crew cabs. They were angled back just like the front doors and the gap filled with sheetmetal. So you had this huge triangle shaped B pillar that really looked funny. They finally went to a modern looking crew cab in the seventies. My favorite is the '79 crew cab short bed power wagon. The last year for a factory Dodge crew cab was 1984.
The power wagon crew cabs were awesome. Dodge also was the first to market with the ext cab. If Im not mistaken they were also first to market with a 4 door ext cab in a full size pickup.
But now Dodge has the megacab but no 8 ft. box to go with it. I see a lot off these around where Im at so Dodge blew it again. What took em so long to get a descent size crewcab. I think I could run Dodges truck division better then whoever they have.
If ford sells more short box crews than long boxes I dont really see how dodge blew it. They get this thing to market and without a huge expenditure by using existing hardware. In other words it doesnt have to do too terribly well to pay for itself. Nice, cheap fix for a hole in their lineup.
Alot of people passed over dodge because of no crew. If 70% of crew buyers want a short box. Then dodge will appeal to a large portion of that market. Have you driven a crew long bed in a city? Cant park the darn things anywhere. Try to parrallel park one one time. Even the mall parking lot can be a pain. If I bought a crew, of any make, I would buy a short bed. BTW dodge called it a club cab.

Yup, I had one as a company car briefly in my last job.
I personally loved driving in it in the city (despite the fact our parking spaces and roads are about 1/2 the size of yours).
Everyone got out of your way (was a PSD, 4x4 dually too - the black colour it had made it look even meaner), never got a ticket for parking in 15min loading zones for hours on end, did not experience road rage once. Had to light up the tyres on a couple of occasions to get around tight corners. Did not think this was a bad thing though.
Despite all this (and the fact a short bed would never suit the purpose I would use a truck for) I believe there is a considerable market out there for a SB "Club Cab"
