Gas milage F250 , 460

So on my 1994 ford f250 with 460 what kind of milage should i expect in the city and on the highway? It has to get better then 4mpg...the engine is all stock. I dont know how much HP. Im going to change wires and plugs and air filter, also O2 sencer and see if that helps.

Any other ideas on how to inprove Gas milage on this truck? Im trying to get it up to 10 mpg if i can.

you should expect 7-9 in the city depending on conditions and up to 12 on the highway if you cruise real nice. Check you gear ratio, that could explain alot too. Maybe something was changed.

Ideas to improve milage

If this was carb then i'd have a few ideas but its injected and i dont know a dam thing about that.....
Right now my exaust is like 3/half 4 inch if i put new exaust like 2/half Would that affect gas milage? mabye change the injecters to some kind of low flow?
any minor (or major) engine modifications that would improve milage?

Im a die hard Ford man and i want to keep this truck. But im a small buisness man and in order to reep a profit i must keep expences down.....if i can get this thing up to 10mpg or better in the city i will try it

if youre willing to do major modifications theres one you could do... but youre not going to like it...
switch to a carb top end- get an edelbrock 600cfm carb, d3ve heads, flat top pistons, headers and dual 3" exhaust, mild exhaust port cleanup on the d3ve's, stock or edelbrock performer intake, duraspark II ignition, and that should get you 9 mpg in town, and about 12 on the highway with 10,000 lbs on the back if you set the timing right and the carb tuned right, and if you do it yourself you could probably get by on about 1500 dollars, or if you didnt want to dig into the shortblock you could get some c8ve, c9ve, or d0ve heads and skip the flat top piston swap

I think i can get close to 9 out of it just by changing air filter/plugs wires/o2 sencer/tighten bolts on exaust manifold im hoping for more. right now its like 4 in the city....
thats my project for tomarrow.

just like it is, what do you think ,if any, improvment from changing the exaust? iv got single cat, single muffler, running on looks like 3/half inch pipe, big *** muffler and big *** cat.... duel splits out of muffler.

if i reduce pipe size will that help?

not really... headers would help alot, but going smaller on the exhaust would only be a restriction.

theres another major engine mod you could do but its expensive... switch to a diesel- theyll get 14 mpg in town doing the work you do, about 17-18 on the highway, and have just as much power if not a little more doing it

for headers you have to look at the primary tube size (not too big) and length (the longer the better)
for a stock 460 id look for 1 5/8 or maybe 1 3/4 primaries- no more, and full length (34-36")

So if i do this , what would be the affect on the engine? and mpg? installing this type of header with what type of exaust system for maximum milage?
what could i expect?

at the point youre at your engine needs to breathe better both in and out, the less restriction you have especially under load the more power and better mileage youll get... if your truck requires 100 hp to move and your engine only puts out 100 hp then you will get sucky mileage... if you have 300 hp and you only need 100 to move you use less throttle and less gas

assuming everything else is in proper tune, youd probably see a 2 mpg increase just on the exhaust, and about 25-30 horse. for exhaust id say full dual 2 1/2 or 3" with x-pipe crossover, and skip the cat
