Will you garuntee that hybred will tow my 12000 lb or more trailer....lol
Methinks it might be cheaper to run a small car (like my 89 Toyota Tercel)
For around town. Then when you need to tow etc. bring out the 460. Just my 2 cents worth.
12 highway and 5 around town, 5 when I hook up the camper or car trailer.
90' f-350 Crew Cab 460, E4OD, 4.ll, Dually. I don't worry bout' the MPG too much, after all its a Dually that hauls ***!
My mileage is right where Gene K is. What never ceases to amaze me about these trucks is our ability to crawl up the side of a mountain at .5 m.p.h., carry insane loads in the back of them, fly down the highway at 70+ (sometimes WAY plus), and do it day in and day out without many issues. My truck is at 310,000 K (I think thats somewhere around 200,000 U.S.). Yep, I wish I had better fuel economy, but it pulls anything I hook on to, is a daily driver, has been up and down various mountains hauling stone, logs, etc., and is frequently called upon to make a quick run on the highway out to my cabin. Other than the expected cost of oil changes, tires, and brakes, my only unexpected expense was a broken clutch linkage last winter- a $100.00 new parts fix. There is no better feeling than that of a truck that will start when you need it and will do as you ask of it (within reason). I'm often tempted to go out and buy a new one, but there are just enough horror stories of newer trucks out there that prompt me to take mine out and give it a fill-up, an oil change, and a drive into the car wash.
My 78 F-250 4x4 always gets between 9-12 MPG. It gets close to 9 towing an 18 foot boat and 12 empty. The difference between town driving and highway driving is almost unnoticable. Four years ago I drove it from Washington State to Alaska with a 3400 pound camper on the back AND pulled a 3500 pound toyota pickup. I went about 55 MPH and got 8 MPG.
We have built a variety of 460EFI's with various combinations. The biggest mileage increase I have seen is on a mildly built 460EFI. Started out as a low mileage 97 460, stock pistons have been replaced with 10.2 Forged units with floating pins. Comp Cams Computer grind 256 cam, 0 Degree Roller Chain, platinum plugs, MSD, 180 stat, 10-30 Synthetic Oil, Air Horn chopped, K&N Air Filter, JBA Headers and 3 inch dual cat exhaust, other items are synthetic valvoline 75-90 gear oil, black pearl greased front wheel bearings and 60psi in all tires (LT-235 85R16E) and 3.55 Gears. Owner claims 12-14 mpg Hwy and 9-10 city, Trans is a Shift Kit equipped C-6 and U.S. Gear O.D. and a Towing Torque Converter. Truck is a 1991 F-250 4X4. Truck can light the tires with no effort. Feels well over 300 Horses.
97 F250HD 4X4 RC E4OD with 3.55 rear I get 12 mpg city and have gotten up to 15 mpg on highway with bed loaded down. Got 143,000 on the clock still runs great, I just need to stop smokin the tires.
I have a 94 ext cab 4x4 460 E4od auto with 4.10 gears and 290,000K. Put in the Accel ignition module with cap, rotor, 8mm plug wires platinum spark plugs K&N air induction kit use an oil treatment with every oil change and 4" exhaust from the cat back. By doing this I have gone from 11to12 mpg to the best mpg to date of 15mpg empty. Just had the tranny built for towing using the transgo tugger shift kit TCS torque conv. had the stock 4 pinion planetary gears upgraded to 6 pinion planetary gears as well as upgrades to the solinoid pack, center shaft forward ring gear and friction materials. The way this thing flies now with the tranny be done is amazing.

Hey machmedic, How does the 97F250 stack up against the 01 PSD?
I got 13mpg hwy with my 97F250 4X4 7.5,3.55, auto. Just chopped the air horn out of air intake tube the other day and it feels like more power(doesn't downshift on same hill at same speed),stays in od. I have habit of pushing od button when coming up to a stop sign to slow down. Does anyone else do that?
After about a years worth of "learning experiences", I took my 86 3/4ton x-cab, on a =highway trip to pick up a load of metal, (pulling a 3000 lb trailer) and got 10 mpg!!!
Thats with a 750cfm holley,w/offy single plane intake+dual exhaust. Cool thing was that I passed a 69 mach 1 w/390 just when I turned 10 mpg! I knew the guy too, he was really stuck on himself. And it felt great to blow by him in a plain old truck with "one of those 460's" in it. Barca
I usually see 9+ city and 10+ highway in an '87 F250SC (last year for the carb!) with a C6.
That's carrying a '72 Chinook Camper (3K lbs. at the VERY least) around...
Haven't posted for a while on this site, never got this far down Forum-wise. I visit the Mercedes Benz Forum (a lot of different models & years), the Subaru SVX Forum (VERY specialized, very good info), the Kawasaki ZX-11 Forum (includes other Ninja models and spans 20 years, or so) on a regular basis: this Forum is a FLAT WONDERFUL resource and I just fixed my driver's power window for $7.99 based upon a couple of threads I found here.
Dealer was talking 30 times that!
Anyway, thanks to any who read this: it is the PEOPLE who post that make a site GREAT!
