Hi Everyone,
Been a few weeks since posting but weather is to nice to be indoors. Changed the oil yesterday because found it to be 1/2 qt. low at 2000 mi between oil change, did not like that at all. After filling it,per ford manuel,6 qts. pulled dip stick but to find it 1/2 qt. low. anyone else have this problem and if so are you adding the 1/2 qt. or leave it alone. The truck is a 2004 F-250 S.D. C.C.with 9500 on the clock.

The dipstick length and what is or is not the true quantity of oil to use is often debated here.
I recommend using common sense and a very LEVEL location for your service and oil level checks... these are very long motors and have the potential for an erronious reading if nose high or low.
From all the info we have, it is safe to say that the true "FULL" level is between 6 and 7 quarts.
My 01 2v V10 used right at 6.75 to read right at the top of the cross hatch part of the stick. My 05 3vV10 uses exactly 6.5 for the same level.
I started to notice that some were asking this question a lot and I got it in my head that truck level plays a large part of the reading so I did an experiment with my own very level parking pad. I checked the oil level and then jacked up the front end to simulate the effects of a "leveling kit" front end lift.
My truck now indicated over full by a hair. Since the dip stick is in the middle I can see how this effects the level. And adds to my suggestion to always use level ground and the same amout of levelness when periodically checking just so you won't see differing levels and assume the motor is using oil.
I put in 6 qts, It reads 1/2 qt low, The book says put in 6, so I leave it at that. Havent had any problems. Some were puting in 6 1/2 and were getting a little puff of blue smoke when starting it up.
I would think that as long as you know that all of the oil is out when drained that you should put in what ever the engines calls for regardless and maybe more than likely your dipstick isn't quite the right length??
Many have reported 6 qts giving 1/2 between full and add-a-quart.
I do too
Manual says 6qts, I used to use 6.5 to get to "FULL". Once in a while I would get a blue puff after a "start-shutdown-wait overnight-start". With only 6 qts, that seems to be a VERY rare occurence. I haven't seen the blue puff since I went to only 6 qts.
it's odd, my owners manual states 7 qt's for my 05 and that leaves it at 1/2 qt low.
i change mine at work so the only lift it fitts is our hunter alignment rack so i know it's dead level. i put in 6 "1 in the filter and 5 to the pan" and fire it up then recheck and add to the line
freds normally correct so i join with him on the dip stick/level problem. for me i go by what the the manual states and have no smoke on start up cold
yeah but the owners manual should take the oil filter capacity into account when it make the recomendation in the owner manual. Who knows, 6 doesnt hurt anything and thats what im gonna keep putting in.
Charlie, mine says the same thing, and does take a full 7 quarts to fill. Over 12,000 miles and it still doesn't use a drop of oil beteeen changes- first engine i've owned to perform so tight.
mine has burned about half a qt for every 1000 to 1500 miles....and it runs strong. I have no idea why. It doesnt plume when i am driving...I dont see any smoke at all being behind my own truck..it does give a little puff if it has sat for a couple of days though..
