Ceramic Brake pads

Its time for a brake job on my daily-driven '97 sedan...

Who makes the BEST ceramic brake pads in terms of coefficient-of-friction, low dust, and not having to heat the pad up before it will stop?

Is there empirical evidence on these pads (as opposed to how the manufacturer markets their product)?

ceramic is a no go. they are harder than the rotor. thus wearing the rotor out before the pads.

If you can find a dealer for bendix get a set I have a set on my 92 f150 cost me $44 but i haven't had any brake dust, stops much better no squeaks, simply the best pad I have ever used.

Advance Auto sells a titanium metallic pad from bendix that works very well.

just put a good quality semi-metalic pad on it.
ceramic pads chew up rotors.

In my experience the semi metallic are much rougher on the disc than the ceramic. Ceramic also tends to be quiter and not make the black dust. Pep Boys offers a quiet stop and NAPA also has ceramic.

I have used carbon-mettalic pads from performance friction for years. They are available from Auto Zone. I can't say anything about dust, it is normal and I don't worry about it.

I put some Napa Ceramix on my Ranger and I liked them so much I put them on my Taurus SHO, too, which has disc brakes all around. Quiet, virtually no dust and great stopping ability.

If you switch to ceramics (or any other different type of pad material for that matter) I recommend either a good sanding of the rotors (what I did to mine) or better yet getting them turned or pick up a new set. The purpose is to have a nice "fresh" surface for the new pads to bed properly.

Carbon metallc pads are dusty and hard on rotors. Another option is Kevlar composite pads, such as EBC or Axxis/Repco. I am using EBC Greenstuff on the BMW. I am also very happy with the Satisfied Pro ceramic pads on the F-150. Rotors are ok so far.

Do you find that the ceramic pads need to be heated up (after a few hard stops) before they will stop OK?

Having used some MetalMaster pads in the past, I found that the first few stops after leaving for work in the morning were, "interesting..."

What I did initially was "bed-in" the pads according to a generally-accepted process:

http://www.stoptech.com/whitepapers/bedintheory.htm

I have to admit I wasn't really gauging brake performance until after I had done that, and I can't really recall the first few stops.

Ceramics don't seem to have the problem of need a warmup.
