Numbers matching
Numbers matching
I have recently become a proud ower of a 84 LTD LX, For those who don't know it is a fox body Fairmont, but it has a 5.0 H.O. in it. Only roughly 3300 were made. It is a sleeper if there ever was one. I have a 331 stroker that I just built that makes about 460hp and was thinking about sticking it in the LTD with a T56 behind it. What do yall think, do I keep it origional or should I just make it stupid fast with the 331 in it. I'm leaning toward stupid fast and itching to suprise a few corvettes that come to the local track. Thanks

Why not just take out the 5.0 and set it aside? It could still be a numbers matching car again as long as the original engine could be put back in. So go ahead, make it stupid fast, surprise a few 'Vettes and some ricers as well.
These days there are VERY few cars that are matching numbers. Other than the niche market vehicles the manufacturers don't do that anymore. That all probably stopped in the early to mid 70's. Set the HO aside and throw the 331 at it.
I found this while digging around,
The Ford "Fox" family of cars are the mid size ones such as the 79-93 Mustang, 80-81 Granada, 79-83 Fairmont, 83-86 LTD/Marquis, 79-88 T-Bird/Cougar.
The 83-86 LTD is often confused with the larger Crown Victoria which until 1983 used LTD in it's name. The 83-86 LTD has a 105.6" wheelbase while the Crown Victoria's is 114.3" & 700 #'s heaver.
The LTD II was from 77-79 and a real "barge", weighting 1100 #'s more on a 12" longer wheelbase of 118".
So I don't think it is a LTD II. The problem I have with keeping the origional motor in it that I have a 1968 F100 with the 331 in it now. I need a motor to put in the place of the 331. I'm going to be moving in about six weeks, so the truck is going to be sold.
I think if I ever sell the car, most people won't care that it has a 331 in it
