Rag Joint Replacement-I know

Hi everyone, sorry for bringing this question up again. I know it's a dead horse.
I did a search in this forum and the steering/supension forum and couldn't find
exactly what I need to know.

First My truck is a '77 F150 4x4. The Rag joint is completly gone(as usuall).
I removed the bolts that 180* apart where the joint is held to the steering shaft.
Now, how do I remove the large safty pins? Do they slide out or what. I didn't see anything else holding it together. There appears to be some type of "clamp" on the pins. Is this also to secure the rag joint?

Lastly, the replacement rag joint i got has four hole that equal in size. Can I "round" two of them to fit over the safety pins? The kit provided two hex head bolts, four nuts, and two threaded pins that are slightly different from one another with threads.
Thanks for any tips you can give me. This is only atemp fix till I get the funds to put on a borgensen shaft.

a new rag joint is about $70-$90. It sounds like you have a universal replacement kit and they just don't fit right.

Thanks oldhalftons, I saw that in my NPD book I have, but didn't want to go that route. That's because I plan on upgrading the steering shaft(one of these days). I was hoping I could use the universal kit until then.

BTW: do I need to remove my steering wheel to get the shaft out of the way?

no, once you get all four bolts out it slides right out, im not sure what you mean by safty pins, do you mean a round headed bolt like in the universal kit??? if so you just grab it with a pair of pliers and turn, just note the way the metal slide on clips are positioned.....

If you go to http://broncograveyard.com they have them for $30 complete. Install 2 bolts and slip it on the gear box and tighten, all done no guess work. That is what I did on my 44 150.

Red face Safety Pins

Ok, I looked at the rag joint assembly on Broncograveyard's website.
My truck does not have that flange. I'll try to be more descriptive here.
On the splined shaft coming out of the gear box there is a clamp bolted to if.
This clamp has is holding two very large pins 180* from each other. These pins
are about 1" long and about 1/2" in dia.
At the gearbox end of the steering shaft there is a flange on it with two "U"
shaped cutouts. The pins reside here. Also in this flange there is two holes that bolts went through that held the original in. The kit that I bought has more harware than what I have removed, and the unit that I saw online has that
silver flange that I do not have.
Sorry for the long post, just really confused here. How rag joints did Ford have-one for each day of the week

i was talking with a freind of mine who is another Ford Truck guru. He suggested that my truck should have a collapsible steering shaft(to keep it from smacking you in the teeth in an accident) which mine is a solid peice(of ****) from the u-joint to the rag joint.
Is this right? Did someone change something? Thanks.

My 78 has a rubber piece about half way thru. The front half of the shaft is larger than the rear half. The rear being towards the cab. Now if it's somehow collapsible there I don't know. It may well be it looks as if one could slide inside the other. ? The rubber piece won't move or slide either way. with out moving the rubber piece it's hard to say if it's solid there. I don't know why it would have the rubber piece if it was a solid shaft. Well now rubber and a piece kinda goes together don't it? LoL
