rag joint rubbing

rag joint rubbing
I have a 73 f100 4x4 with manual steering and i just replaced the steering gear and the rag joint rubs on the frame. It looks like it was doing this with the old gear also. I just bought this truck. Also someone has welded about half way up the shaft. Are there different size rag joints on these trucks between 2 and 4x4

Are you sure it's a rag joint? My Ford parts catalog doesn't show a rag joint on the 4WD it shows a coupling with a cross shaft and bearings.

You know, rereading your statement it sounds like someone may have jerry-rigged the steering to get around replacing the lower shaft
