Starter?

Turn the key, get a click. Battery power is good. Jump start doesn't help. Jumping the relay terminals doesn't help. I think the click I hear is from the solonoid on the starting motor.

Could it be anything BUT the starter at this point before I pull it and get a rebuilt?

99% sure it is your starter. Clicking noise is tale tail sign that the starter is toast. You can always bang on it with a hammer and try starting. That at least will get you to a mechanic if need be.

Hammer was a no go. Looks like I need to pull the starter and take it for a trade at the rebuilder down the street.

Luckily its a piece of cake to remove this must be the only part on the Aerostar that I don't find new curse words for while removing .

This is something literally anyone can do whether you have auto experience or not. If you can operate a socket wrench your good to go.

Just be sure to secure that ground wire back on the top bolt when your putting the starter back in.

I didn't have time to do the starter today and "someone" is down my back about getting it running so I used the free towing service with the insurance co. to take it to the Starter & Alternator place around the corner.

They say it starts like a charm every time they try it, can't find a problem.

I got nothing out of it for several days and I am sure to have it crap out again when I least expect it.

What else could it be?

It either doesn't budge or it starts like a champ. This is driving me nuts.

It might be the sign of a failing solenoid its the little small round device on the top next to the starter motor.

This little guys job is to enage and disengage the starter and sometimes before they fail they can be quite intermittent.

Good Luck

It's probably like most of us going to the dentist. It might hurt like heck before you get there, but the moment you are there, you are so scared the pain goes away

Heat Related?

The starter on my 92 4.0 AWD started to fail first when the engine was hot. i.e. if you drove around, stopped, then tried to start the car a few minutes later, nothing. But if you waited for an hour or so for things to cool down, it started right up. I'm suprised that the Starter Shop didn't check that.

I saw the same problem with the starter on a friends 8x 3.0 v6 Sable. The warmer the engine got the slower it would crank, just like the battery was low. It started right up in the morning, and after sitting in the parking lot all day no problem.

I have had that slow cranking what hot problem caused by corrosion on the starter terminals. They can get real gucky over the years.

Whenever you replace the starter motor, it is alwas a good idea to replace the solenoid too, since a faulty starter can overload the solenoid, and they therefore, tend to both go out at about the same time. It doesn't go the other way around. A faulty soleniod will not usually wear out the starter motor (unless it's been arching)
