I have an 89 f150 with 302/AOD. I stopped to get gas and the truck wouldn't start back up. just clicks. I knew batt was good but tried to jump it off anyway. Still just clicks. I put in a new batt, still just clicks. The noises are coming from the starter relay on the pass side fenderwell and also from a black box mounted to a bracket bolted to the air filter case. The black box is labled EEC test, fuel pump, towing, and some other test. I have tested the voltage going to the starter relay and that is good. I would imagine there is some sort of relay switch in that black box but not sure if there could be something else causing the clicks. Anyone had this before? Any help is appreciated, I am driving my 55 f100 while this truck is down and it doesn't have heat. Steve
Get two people. You use the meter and check the voltage again at the starter relay while someone tries to start it. I bet the voltage is up, and then goes down when the key is turned. If it does this, it's probably a bad connection at the battery.
But that's the best way to check for problems. You have to load the circuit down while you are checking it, otherwise it will just "float" and give you false readings.
Steve, do what Dave told you to do and then check the voltage at the starter. The 93 that I had corroded at the starter on the cable end and I had to replace the cable. Also check the voltage where it comes out of the relay. Steve
Thanks, I will try this tomorrow. I think I am going to just go ahead and put in a new battery ground cable and terminal while I am at it. These 21 year-old cables have done their job and look like they are ready for retirement.
I just had the same problem after replacing a battery. The larger red (hot ) wire to the starter from the positive terminal had a break in it. I replaced the wire and was good to go on my '93 Expolder.
Thanks, I plan to replace the ground on mine since it really looks bad. The positive is fairly new and looks good. I hope this does the trick. I had to leave it at work the other day and am off for a few days, so as soon as I can get back to the shop I will do the work there.
I swapped out the ground terminal cable today and everything is working great! The old cable was so brittle and stiff and also had plenty of the coating worn off. The replacement cable I got from the auto parts store had a connector on the end for the bolt that goes to the block but the hole was too small for the bolt. All the repacement cabes had the same size connector, so I took a drill and bored it out a bit. Worked like a champ. Thanks for the advise guys!
