Make sure the starter mating surface on the bellhousing is clean. This is where the starter gets it's ground circuit.
Which pos and neg cables did you replace? From battery to relay? What about the ground on the engine or frome?
i replaced the hot wire from the battery to the starter and ground from battery to starter, everything works fine if i pull the starter back away from the flywheel i take the bolts out and pull it back keeping the case touching the bellhousing and when you try to crank it it works fine gear come out and spins but when mounted back in the housing sounds like it is kicking out but not spinning really sounds like its hitting the flywheel but it may just be the sound of it kicking out, any ideas???
sounds as if the starter that was in the vehicle origionally started having this problem, so I doubt it's the wrong starter. I couldn't tell from your origional post, but did you inspect the entire gear around the fly wheel? Have your friend rotate the engine slowly with a wrench while you look through the starter hole.
Also, I don't think the starter has a ground cable to it, it's just grounded to the block, as mentioned above.
yeah it does have a ground wire that runs from the battery down to the engine cradle were it is in a crimp and attached to the cradle for a ground and from there to the starter. as i am really a chevy guy i have always seen the ground from the battery to the block or chassis. i did move the flywheel and it turns fine. rotated about half way around and teeth looked fine but when i turn the key to start it never turns the motor at all. when i hit the switch or jump the fender solenoid over the starter clicks. the gear comes out but cant tell if its coming all the way as it sounds like its hitting the flexplate. i cannot see any type of adjustment to the starter to make it claer the flexplate as it would have to come down from it. thanks for the help. any more ideas???
also forgot to say. when i do try to start or jump the solenoid over several times both hot and ground wires get really hot as if the starter was locked up.
