RIP Ford Aerostar

Sorry, I've been busy. Now, I'm down my only vehicle.

Jan 31st, 8am. I'm driving my wife to work on W County Line Rd, in the cold rain and overcast. I come over a slight rise and around a curve to see some doofus sliding around the road in his big Chevy Avalanche. I can't slam on brakes, as his flailings in the truck would just end up with his engine in my lap, so I dive to the side and hope I can go around fast enough.

It was too little, too late. I didn't have time, energy or anything else. My Luck had run out. He hit me right where you can see in my gallery and here, if it'd let me post the flipping pic.

There's more in my gallery, but the back part is pushed off the frame. Ruined. Thank God I'd dropped my two kids off at school! They wouldn't have stood a chance.

It was a great van, and I loved it. RIP.

hopfully he doesnt have GEICO insurance. but thats another story for another day..

if your tough aero took that much damage, what did his rig look like?! dang. i'd be soooo mad! I hope the insurance CO doenst pull the "heres $500, its totalled" BS.

With damage like that id be seeing a doctor cause the doc will say you have whiplash at least. and thats a good chunk of change. with damage klike that the insurance company would be terrified to show that picture in court and then dare say that you werent hurt. lol. instant out of court settlement.

sorry to see the death of another aero. it looked like a nice one. best of luck to you and yours

What misery. Gruesome photos of the old gal, thanks for sharing. She gave her all and you walked away to play another day - can't ask for much more than that. You're right about having dropped off the kids first, count those blessings!!

Omg!

How fast was he going? Any pics of his Avalache?

Sorry to hear about your Aero, but there are others out there to replace it, and your wife's life and your's is more important than a hunk of metal. Glad everyone is ok.

Ditto, glad to hear you guys are alright. Metal can be replaced, but broken bodies are bad news.

The van protected you, it did its job.

sigh... why do idiots drive 4x4's? why do these people think just because you have 4x4, that means you are invincible traction wise in ALL weather? i've been tailgated by 4x4's in snowstorms and slushy conditions. i'm really curious what goes on in those heads...

surely am glad your kids were in the back seat at that time. they might have been shot out of the van with that kind of damage.

I'm not sure it was the 4x4 version, to be honest. I think it was a simple 4x2, as I didn't see the big old SR-71 or whatever they call it sticker on it.

Also; his front end was gone. All the chrome and plastic was scattered over the road. He had one bit of fender pushed onto a tire, and that was about it. I think it could have been driven.

He was simply going too fast for a wet, narrow two lane road. It's clear there, but there's that curve I mentioned and tons of Garbage Trucks through there on a regular basis. I mean, the MS DOT Weight Enforcement division has almost regular hiding spots there! They pull over half a dozen each time they take up positions.

As for the wreck... He had Nationwide, and so far the office here has been nothing short of Miracleous. I haven't had a problem yet. He can't sue, that's for sure. I had someone right behind me, and he came within inches of wiping out her Dodge Caravan as well. She gave her report later, I believe.

I don't know what I'll end up with; I'm looking into Trucks. Might get a Ford.

Wow that really sucks, And I thought My 89 Aerostar was bad when it got stolen, the side of mine was all smashed in, the front end was totalled, the motor was blown, all the windows were smashed, the tires were slashed, but yours looks worse. It really is a good thing your kids werent in the back when that idiot hit you, they suer are tough vans but they dont hold out well in collisions.

I agree. Having 4WD doesn't make you stop any faster, nor does it make you turn sharper. Freakin morons, that what they are. Sorry to see an Aerostar go, but you were blessed to have one. Imagine if you were in a Caravan (forbid). You or your wife could have been seriously hurt of killed.

i think the only thing that COULD kill an aero would be a bigger truck, i mean bigger than the aero. I like sitting above hood level of most everything else out there. that means if you get T-boned by anyone, their hood is going to end up under your butt somewhere, not through your rib cage!

I am going to get one of those nerf bar looking things that go into your towing reciever hitch in place of the ball. I doubt the rear bumper is worth anything in a rear end collision. and the bar would make a nice imprint in someones grill.

if/when they total your aero out. let us know what they gave you! the bad thing is that some shade-tree mechanic is going to buy it at a salvage auction, tack weld some new panels on, and sell it to someone else like it was safe to drive. SCARY! I hope it goes to aero heaven in the organ donor program (the junkyard) so it can contribute its wealth of useable parts to us aero lovers.

hope all goes well!

The bad part is that the Junk-yard will give like $50-$200 for it. If the engine and transmission is still good it would be worth it to keep it and find another Aerostar that needs a engine or trans. Then either buy it or sell them the parts they need.

it depends I have had a couple of wrecks one the insurnce coumpany want my car $3500 they get the car $1000 and I kept the car heck I had $1200 said it yours!!!

the other car was a $450 beater got $1250 plus the car they didn't want it (stupid chevy)

so make sure and ask about it...make sure they take care of the towing and storage fee... some company's try to make you pat for them out of your settlement....
also you can just settle on the car ONLY not medical included...

Well my wife's 89 Aerostar got hit in the rear. Just busted the bumper and put a little crease in the metal under it. Went to 3 bodyshops and they wanted $1600. to fix.
The insurance company wanted to total it because they said that the repair was more than the van was worth. I asked what it was worth and they said around $450.
I said I had just rebuilt the engine and transmission, That it was worth more like
$3000-4000.

So I said forget it and settled with the guy for $1300. and fixed it myself for less than $200. $60.00 for a used bumper, $33.00 to have the flap welded back that I cut to pound the crease out. The rest was for misc. Body tools.
