Sounds like you don't have the full 12 v to the coil. When the wiring is correct you will measure 12 + on the red wire and 6+ v on the green wire or black when running. It should put 12v to tlhe coil when starting. You can get by with12 v on the coil but you can kill the coil most likely. The coil will be for electronic ignition accepts the horseshoe collar connection. It is good for 40 k. The older coils will not last long with a 12v run load. The first conversion hasn't even hickuped for over a year and makes the old 352 run much better and fires right up. The second one has some problems and I ended up changing the alternator, replacing the voltage regulator, killed a coil and replaced the module but runs fine there is no substitute for getting all the small details right. Connections must be good to do tlheir job, change to the big cap which you need to get good brass connections No sub for good tight fit on the spark plug wires and they will do much better.
I hope you get your wiring fixed and it should drive better.
I am going to change up to the tfi setup. Will report on the results.
