No resistor is needed. I did the same thing and have been very happy with it. I did add a TFI coil to mine. The change was enough that my wife noticed how much better it ran. I would run the big cap if you use the TFI coil. Less chance of carbin tracking.

What exactly is a TFI coil? I've heard two takes on it. It's either a module attached to the dizzy, or a coil. If I don't use TFI, do I have to keep the resistor?
Resister wire is the old wire that ran to the factory coil. I would double check it to see if it is 12 volts or less. If less 12 volt run a new wire from the switch out.
TFI coil is used in the late 80’s to sometime early 2000's (I do not remember the exact years; I just know it was fuel injected and still has a dizzy in it) 460 with fuel injection and a dizzy in it. It is a true 45,000 volt coil. Most bone yards sell them for just a few bucks.
For the TFI coil, you will need to fab up a bracket for it. Mine will get a new bracket for it over the winter as it was just a quick peace of scrape metal that I used.

So a coil like this?
What else would I need to do to use this with a 76 dizzy and a GM HEI?
I forgot the 300 had them. You can pickup all new part at most part stores. I have not seen a TFI coil go bad. So I rolled the dice and went with used for under $5.00. That also included the short pig tail and connector to the coil.
The plug is the only thing I'd have to come up with? No other mods needed?
You may have to fabricate a mounting bracket to mount the coil to the FE engine but otherwise (besides the connector), that's it. --the coil could also be mounted to the inner fender apron.

Great, got it ordered. Does the mount I make need to be grounded?
Oem fe 76 cap is small, all V8's 77 &up use the lager cap with matching rotor that mounts on top of the tower housing. Both you can buy at your loco parts store. Buy the cap with brass contacts.
Also you'll need the later spark plug wires to fit the larger cap.
