I want to replace the points in my `70 360 motor with Duraspark, I know I need dist, coil, and module, but can someone tell me what years and displacement motors will have distributors that will fit my motor? Thanks, Doug
Chreck at parts house for electronic dist for a 76 390 eng. Just like new about 45-50.
Match ford coil for electronic igniton. Gap new plugs .45. Go with new wiring go with cap, rotor and 8m wires. Easier than it sounds. New duraspark modules plentful.
Sre runs better ez startng. More bang for buck. Love mine. Going to upgrade to tfi system soon. my 2 cents.

Ok, thanks for the input, I checked out some parts houses, what is not clear to me is- do I need to go for the big dist cap if i upgrade to a `76 Duraspark system? The dist they show takes a regular cap, but the adapter and big cap will also fit.
Sucess! I just bought a rebuilt dist-$50, new module-$18, cap and rotor-$7, and did my own wiring, and it fired right up. Is is worth it to replace the coil? The cap is the smaller style. Thanks for the input. Doug
you need to replace the coil before it strands you somewhere with a burned out module. The resistance accross the coil is different for electronic ignition and you can't mix the two. It will work for a while but not long. Hawkrod
OK, I`ll buy a new coil for the 76 setup, can I leave the resistor wire as is in my 1970 truck? I`m told to gap the plugs at 44, what should the timing be set at? Thanks again, Doug
Yes, the resistor will be fine and you will get better performance from the wider gap, some people run up to 60 thou but 45 is a good place to start. You can get too much gap even with a Duraspark. Set teh timing for the engine specs or play with it by advancing until you experience ping and then back off a few degrees. Hawkrod
Thanks again for the fast replies, I`m gonna go out and install new copper exhaust gaskets, set the time and gap the plugs and spend the day trying to get my old truck running right and quiet. I really appreciate the help. Doug
I have problems with the conversion to electronic ignition on my 1970 360ci one ton Ford truck.. As advised on this forum, I bought a rebuilt dist, new cap, rotor, coil and module for a 1976 390ci truck, I got the module with six wires and a blue grommet. I couldn`t find a harness, so I carefully followed the schematic. At first I used crimp-on push connectors and after it fired up I soldered and shrink wrapped all connections. I warmed it up, set the timing, and started and stopped it a few times as I was also installing copper exhaust manifold gaskets, and I retorqued the manifold bolts hot. All seemed fine, so I was ready to back it out of my shop, and when I went to fire it up, it wouldn`t start, no spark. I checked both start and run wires and both are providing juice to the module. I triple checked my wiring, all is right according to the six wire schematic. I don`t have a truck book, so I checked out troubleshooting in for a 76 Ford car, and it shows a 7 wire module, so now I`m really confused. According to Chilton`s and Motor`s car manuals, Dura spark didn`t start until 1977, the previous breakerless ignition used a regular looking dist cap and was called breakerless electronic ignition. I`m wondering if I didn`t parts for two different systems. How can I tell if the parts I got are compatible? Where can I find troubleshooting info on the six wire system? Anyone have a wiring harness they want to sell? Please advise, I spent a bunch of bucks and now I have a dead truck. Thanks, Doug

Been there done that. The best tool I found is a good voltmeter and a couple good test lights. One possible problem you should be using the DuraSpark II module which has the 2 wire going into your wiring. I think I ended up replacing my coil replacing module with a known good one even the original volt reg and when you have tracked down the culprit you will be rewarded with that growl exhausting from your eng you will achieved the status of already been there done that. There is a good diaghram of how the wiring is done on the ford six cylinder site. I;ll try to find it.
Good luck i'm betting once you found the problem you can enjoy the benefits.

I figured out that the module went out with only 10 minutes use, and since I cut the plug off I can`t return it. The only thing I can figure out that is wrong is voltage to the coil is 6.4 volts. I`ve ordered a ballast resistor wire for a 76, I hope that will fix it. I found a wiring harness, and installed it, Auto Zone guarentees the module, so if it goes again I can replace it free. Can someone tell me what coil voltage should be for a 1976 electronic ign? Thanks, Doug
