Back to the origianl topic, I read in a magazine (Your guess is as good as mine as to which one it was) that Cummins also has a V6 diesel coming out, and it makes a tad less hp and the same torque as their V8 prototype, but the torque of both are limited because Dodge doesn't offer a drivetrain that can handle more than what they put out, but what I don't understand is, doesn't the current Cummins 600 make more torque than the prototype V8? If they don't have a drivetrain that can handle the less torque of their V8 diesel prototype, then what handles the torque of the 600? Maybe it's because the V8 is being considered for 1/2 tons instead of 3/4 tons. Thoughts?
The 5.6 L Cummins V8 was meant for the 1/2 ton Dodge pickup. I actually heard some rumors a while back about using it in the Ford F-150 also, but that was when Ford was in a disagreement about the V6 IH engine or something. The 5 speed automatic found behind the Hemi and 4.7 in the dodge pickups is probably the tranny that would be used with the diesel engine, and it is not nearly as heavy as the 48RE 4-speed behind the 5.9 Cummins. I wish that you could remember which mag you read about that in, because it would be an interesting article.
Here in SD, diesel is more expensive than gas. It kind of sucks because I just bought a diesel, but I love the engine and it makes much better mileage than what I had, so I may be saving some money on fuel. In east river, there is a larger margain between cost of diesel and gas, due to ethanol being cheaper than 87 octane in some places. On the better side of the river, diesel is about the same price, but gas is $.10 higher, because there is no discount on ethanol.
An interesting side note on Cummins V/8 diesel. In the 1960's Denver-Chicago Trucking (now owned by someone else) tested the Cummins V/8. They used it from Denver to Salt Lake City and back. They wanted to see if they could make better time over the Mountains with the V/8. They did not stay with the engine but I do not know why, obviously it was not efficient or it would still be manufactured. I believe the life on the engine was less than on the 6 and also on the Caterpillar. I know that they had a problem with I believe an oil return hose, finally went to a teflon lined stainless steel hose. I have no idea if anyone else used this engine. I happened to know the man in charge of maintenance which is how I know about the engine.
I say...bring back a newer version of the 300 cid. That way we can get decent towing and decent Hp out of an easy to service motor........I know I know I'm dreaming
