the heads do work, look at the duramax from gm, the volvos and vw's 4's v6's and v10 tdi in their suv and all the others with alloy combos.
the little cummins engine in my boat has a alloy head, turbo and intercooler runs just as good as a gaser and only uses 3 gals a hour wide open at 45 mph . the techno. stuff is catching up with us and lower weight means better mpg . guess time is really going to tell us what we are going to have to live with.
not really i am a mechanic that works on combo diesels every day, it does work and it is the techno stuff of whats happening now. i was just naming a few that work and we see every day
sorry if anyone felt i was sarcastic, really just realistic but love my fords
captchas, I have a Duramax. I was being sarcastic because the Cummins guys were saying an aluminum head iron block v8 diesel would never work (warped heads, blown headgaskets, ect) when the Duramax came out. But the Duramax has proved them wrong because there are no head or headgasket issues even with the power cranked way up. Now that Cummins has an aluminum head iron block v8 diesel I wonder if their tune will change.

thought they ment me, cast block alloy head goes back so long its unreal, i forsee a alloy block diesel with cast liners and alloy heads some time down the line as it already old school gas techno. vw's new tdi dosnot even have a injection pump any more! how long before that carries over elseware? and that is really old school from the days of 2 stroke dd's, after 42 years on the dealership line i have seen a lot of old tech to me come back refined much better new tech. who knows what the future has instore every year is something new and better.
Hp is only half of the equation. This 270 hp engine will be a real pleasure to tow with. Will get 30% better fuel economy. Have better driveability and hold its value better.
Really?
I can maybe see the economy part and towing.
But better drivability??? I seriously doubt this.
Hold it's value better??? Hardly, especially when you take into account the current demand for deisel fuel.
Have you checked gas prices lately? Driveability would be so much nicer with a diesel, not to mention the longevity of diesels. HP or not, the durability and the fact that pappw can drive a diesel F-150 for the last 20 or 25 years of his life with MUCH less maintenance than a gasser is worth having the diesels in half tons. I can't wait to see whether companies can actually make a good `small` diesel.
yes gas around here was 188 today diesel was 242 , diesels run forever and hold their dollars on resale. a good mantained gas? depends on how its maintained and driven. most of my own usaly have around 200k when i get a new one. small diesel's lets look back at the old 4cyl. and 5 cyl. benzes, vwdobs. volvos, pojos, ford tractors with their 3cyl. mills, guess they are out there just when they get put into something with 4 wheels and start making a difference for our every day lifes that they get a big look over. i would love to see the 4cyl. 1.7 litter 120 h/p turbo aftercooled cummins thats in my boat in a car just enough h/p to run 65 plus and sip the fuel. as to small diesels how about a 13 h/p single cyl. yanmar from a house standby gen set.or from a 2 or 3 cyl gen set runing a oil/ electric hybrid for back and forth or around town
i don't what to seem know! it all i would just love to see some of the techno we have, used more so we do not have to be so hooked on arab oil

I for one would like the battle of the big three with relation to half ton diesels be about economy instead of hp. I wonder how possible it would be to have one that would get 30mpg and 23 or so pulling my boat.
amen on the fuel economy, pushing black smoke do we need to? h/p wars are dejavo to this old timer, brings back the area of ruffly 1955 to 1971 to me , high h/p diesels i've built some cummins 855's and dd 2 strokes run great but don,t last as long as stock. they can only be goosed so far . now with road side smoke inspections i would not want to chance a smoke ticket , who knows what the furture has instore anymore a 30mpg truck may just be possible . i for 1 would love one in the mean time i'll setal for what i'm going to get"05 250 4x4 " and get right now around 15

Ford is currently developing an all aluminum 4 banger diesel for the European Focus. With the Liberty coming out soon, it's time for Ford to do something besides waiting.

new jersey has anywhere anytime road side checks of trucks. the signs saying where they are reads smoke inspection and they mean it if the smoke is ecessive you get a ticket for it. afreinds old dump has a 1693 ta cat in goosed to h--- and back smokes like no tomorrow he had to have it towed away

Do you think it would apply to out of state vehicles? Let's say I decide to drive our dump truck up there, and it starts belching black smoke, they'd write me a smoking ticket? (This is out of curiosity)
Some things are incredibly stupid and I strongly think thats one of them.
