anybody read the article in the new four wheeler?
it states that cummins has a prototype V-8 that puts out 300 hp,460 lbft.
its not due untill 2009 but so much for those cummins guys saying that thier I-6 is a better design than our V-8.

 

That would be great if they offered both engines. Best of both worlds right? The V-8 for the people who like to hot-rod it, and the I-6 for the peeps who tow heavily. I say heavily in a sense that doesn't necessarily constitute weight.

 

Well if they build it with the same strength bottom end components as their inline 6, it'll be quite the hot-rodder engine.

 

I read an article in the TDR magazine about the cummins engine you speak of. It was at Dept of Energy conference or display or something. It was in a 1500 Dodge and the engine is supposedly the first fully 2007 compliant engine on the planet. Dodge has no agreement with Cummins to put this in their truck so that is still up in the air. What was said was that it was fast in a half ton. The engine is also small enough to put into many half ton and suv platforms.

 

there's a v6 version too with only 250-270 hp, same torque. I hope this means the half-tons are finally about to experience the goodness that is diesel.

 

Yeah Dodge has to do something If Ford is gonna release Diesels for there smaller pickups and SUV's aswell. Imagine the power and mpg...make me so giddy!

 

not trying to be ignorant, but if the small disels are making only 270 HP, the current gassers are more than capable of competeing. MPG may be better, but I would still ranther have gas than a small diesel.

 

Hp is only half of the equation. This 270 hp engine will be a real pleasure to tow with. Will get 30% better fuel economy. Have better driveability and hold its value better.

 

The engine that cummins has in a dodge for testing has 300hp and 450 tq. Should be enough. I'm sure there are others that are on the drawing boards and tested. Should make for a fun next few years.

The V6 and was used in a few large trucks, and the small and 903 v8 were use mainly for agriculture, a few were put into trucks. Interestingly enough, they focused mainly on their famous 855 ci, what we know as the N14 (14 liter). I-6. In addition to the N14, they make the L10, M11, NSX, and a few other models, including the 6BT and 4BT, again all I-6, except the 4BT.

International (navistar) made a 8-900 ci V8 for agriculture. I don't know that too many achieved 2,000 before they grenaded. Tractors were then repowered with the 855, for the most part. IH's claim to fame was the I-6 DT466. Now of course, we are familiar with the DT 444, or 7.3 liter Powerstroke.

 

i think small diesels as you call em aren't really small at all. The V-6 Powerstroke coming out is gonna have pretty good ratings about where the early diesels were in the late 80's thru early 90's. Give them about 5 years of production and i bet we'll see a few producing about 300hp and 450ft lbs and they'll be more efficient than their big brothers.

 

small? my boat has a 4 cyl.1.7 liter 130 hp cummins/mercruiser with a alpha out drive, jeep has a diesel in the liberty now a 4cyl.

 

thats small. the new PSD V-6 is supposed to be Twin Turboed

 

silly cummins, a v8 diesel with aluminum heads will never work
