Yeah, tried that. It almost works. I wonder if the key has been copied once or twice making the key fit a little sloppy. Might try taking a small file to in and try to clean it up.
I made a replacement with cable and crimps from Sears hardware. it's an odd size cable 3/64" or something. Used a cable slightly smaller and it works OK.
Making up a cable is pretty easy. A good auto parts store should be able to supply you with a similar cable that you can adapt to fit. While I didn't have the need to do it on my '79, I have done it numerous times for PTO's on trucks. Securing it properly is key! If it has a place to kink or bend you'll be doing it all over again.
