Replacement Speedo Cable Too Long?

I purchased a new speedo cable for my 78 4x4 C6. The cable designated for that application is 118" long per JBG. I bought mine from LMC, but it's the same 118" length. The (original?) cable that I removed is just 83". JBG has cables for other applications in 76" and 95" lenghths.

What do I do with almost 3 feet of extra cable? Would it be better to get the 95" length specified for a '73?

Right now I'm thinking I'll just clean and lube the old one and see if that fixes the issue (bouncing needle). Not sure if I need some particular lube, so probably will stop at NAPA tomorrow and ask.

Are you using the old speedo cable housing ?If your just installing the inside cable you can just cut off the end going to the trans or transfer case

ND is right. I would need a D7TZ-17260-J. Looks like is just selling a few universal lengths.

MeanJean - How would I make the end of the cable square after I cut it? Are they just ground down a bit?

End going into trans is square.

White lube works well for lubing the cable. just don't over do it esp. at the speedometer end.

Used to be you could buy a "universal cable" not with the housing. You could cut to length and crimp on the end that goes to the speedometer.

Inside the speedo cable housing is a woven steel core. It's supposed to be lubed (graphite or white lithium grease) every so often, but most people are unaware.

When the lube dries out, the core binds up inside the housing and snaps.

Auto parts stores sell a universal woven steel core kit. It comes with a separate square end that's installed after the cable is cut to fit.

Make sure to use only a very fine film of graphite or white lithium grease.

D7TZ-17260-J =

WOLFE FORD in Lidgerwood ND has 1 = 701-538-7337.

FRIESEN FORD in Aurora NE has 1 = 402-694-3111.

HASELDEN BROS. in Hemingway SC has 1 = 843-558-2134.

No other Ford dealer, no obsolete parts vendor has any.

The replacement cable comes with a square end and a tool ya use to hammer it on with.
RTFM.

I was ordering some other parts and at the last minute ordered the replacement cable as well.

Now that I'm a little smarter with everyones help, I'll try lubing and then use a inner cable replacement if necessary.

Thanks for the input.
