Ken, I understand your anger about your relief coming in when they dern well please. Same thing happens here with only one person. Sounds like it's been active on here so far tonight.
I work in Mental Health at a Safe House. I fully understand the need to stay awake. you never know what a psychotic, hallucinating, hearing voices person may do. We hopefully weed the dangerous ones out beforehand and they are hospitalized for first stabilization, then they come to us for the final, and lower cost remainder of stabilization before going home. There are some nites, that there is no way on God's green Earth that I would doze off. then, if we have someone in that we know well, and know their patterns of behavior, dozing is not a large issue. I guess you'd have to experience this work like I have for around 15 years, to get to know the "feeling" of people and when it is safe to kick back. I'm not a lazy person, but working a wierd shift schedule like I do, you cannot plan ahead and get 8 hours sleep before going in. My body clock gets highly messed up with my schedule, but I know when to drink 20 gallons of coffee and when I don't need to.
I haven't been caught asleep yet, I hope I never do and I rarely ever fall asleep if I do usually I force myself awake quickly. Remeber our conversation on how to stay awake, tabasco sauce, caffiene pills etc.

I worked midnights for 7 years. I never had any problem staying awake but then I was used to it. Going back and forth from days to nights would be very tough to do.
Last night I made it through the night with only one dip about 4 am, I was getting sleepy and needed some pick up. Tonight ain't as good though, I had one on the way to work.
Abouthe only night I get sleepy is my first night in, and that's just because I can't sleep on Saturday nights before I come in. So usually I just tough it out for the Sunday morning shift after having woke up at 6 am on most Sat. mornings and sleeping after church on Sunday.

Are we still talking about the clients???

I understand where you're coming from, several friends & family work in the same occupation. Not exactly schedule friendly. Somebody's gotta be there, and they really don't care if you just got done working 18 hours, as long as you can get your butt there in an hour to cover whoever just called in, quit, had to accompany someone to the hospital, ect...
I certainly don't envy you. It takes a special kind of patience to deal with that special kind of patient. err, client, as NYS now asks them to be called.
Oh, no, cancel that. I forgot, it's "consumer" now. How delightfully PC.
Anyway, 4 hours to go, give or take a few minutes. And so far, nothing bad has happened. That's always a good thing. Now, to go check on my coworker and ensure she hasn't done anything dumb in the 30 seconds it took me to type this.
I should be out of here in about 5 hours, but since I am here untill the same dayshift operator (who was about 45 minutes late this morning) shows up for his dayshift, it could be closer to 5 1/2 or more.
I worked at a Jail many years ago, fortunately I was in the power plant not employed as a guard, because I am a way too hot headed & lack the political correctness to coddle the dregs of society when a post birth/very late term abortion often seems more appropriate.
The popcorn study has gone bad already. Seems only two types of popcorn remain for tonights study.
Orville butter something, and Act II Hulk? I think I might try the Orville butter stuff, already got a handle on the Act II stuff. Therefore, no scientific research tonight.
Looks like tonight will be spend trying to stay awake. Gonna be a long night. Not even sure I'm really here.

I ran across a random private label popcorn locally a while back, that I'm pretty sure should come with it's own defibrulator. This stuff made even the most butter soaked movie house popcorn taste like sheetrock.
I had about 2 handfulls, wrung the grease off my hands, downed a bottle of water and a soda, and gave up. I ended up drinking about a gallon of water over the following 2 hours.

That sounds kinda disgusting. I love movie popcorn.....I'm odd like that. Good movie popcorn to me has a good amount of butter, and kinda stale.
Like microwave popcorn much the same way. Its okay fresh, but the next day is even better.
Yea, I am a Power Engineer/Millwright, my title at the Jail was actually, Power Plant Supervisor, my responsibility was to supply all utilities to the Jail, including Heat/Air Conditioning, Electrical power, Potable Water treatment, Water distribution, Waste Water collection & Waste Water treatment, as well as maitenance of all mechanical equipment.
I am glad thats old news, even though I am just another work'n stiff in a pulp mill now, I don't miss the headaches or stress of working at a jail. The bonus is that they pay better here than they did at the Jail too... .
