Ok,
the rear window wont go down by key or switch. We power tested the switch and its fine, and we ran a hot wire (using jumpercables) to the motor on the window and i would work fine. But again when the switch is hooked up it wont work. Could it be the wiring from the switch to the motor? please help i have been working on restoring my 88 Bronco Eddie Bauer and this is one of my final problems.
try your dash switch first. The voltage to the key switch can be shot at the plug behind the left rear turn signal, but the ground goes through the dash switch for both the tailgate and dash switch.
Sounds confusing, but the dash switch is also the cheapest part to change
just clean all of your connections and put some dielectric grease on it. should fire right up. tis a common prob with bronco due to inadequit drainage in the tailgate
I agree with the kid on this one. I had the exact same problem on my 79, and even though I'm sure the electric configs are different, I think this will work for you too. On mine I found the problem right next to the battery at a relay. Check your wiring diagram and start from the begining cleaning up connections as you go.
There is a safety switch located inside the tailgate next to the key switch. That is a known weakness in the rear window design. If it doesn;t like the way the gate is latched, it will cut off power to the window motor. Sometimes a new bushing on the latch strike will fix this. A way to find out is to push in hard on the tailgate on the drivers side then try the key. If it works...new bushing or adjust the switch or bypass the switch which many people have done. If that doesnt work, then using a ohmmeter, you can check continuity between the motor and the key switch, the key switch and the safety switch, the safety switch and the harness plug just inside the drivers side fender. Easy to get to and unplug. If all that checks out, then start with replacing the dash switch. But first and foremost....check your fuses. You want to make sure that you check all easy possibilities before you start replacing parts. Could be as simple as splicing a wire back together.
if pushing on the tailgate driverside while turning the ke dont work then open the taigate and on the driverside you will see a wireing harness. a lot of times the wire that feeds the motor power inside this harness will break. i believe that it is black with a yellow tracer.
The harness that travels inside the tailgate closure - ie, the one that flexes all the time - is notorious for breaking the black wire with yellow tracer. If it has been broken, use a westinghouse braid to join the wires and then solder. Wrap the whole affair up with heat shrink tubing for a thorough repair.
