Howdy all. I just put in a new gear box, but there's still a little play in the tires, causing the truck to wander a little when I hit bumps. A place sells a stabilizer kit for my truck, and I was wondering exactly what the kit would connect to. Essentially it is just a shock that I assume connects to the steering somewhere, and to the frame. I just don't know exactly where to put it.
The one side hooks to the left radius arm, the other clamps to the tie rod that runs to pass. side. I have one on my '69 F100 2wd.
I'm not sure if it will help the wandering. It helps if you hit bumps and it tried to kick the wheel, but casual wandering I don't think it will do much.
How tight is the rest of suspension?? Radius arm bushing, king pins, tie rod ends?? Any one of these could be suspect in making it a bit loose.
What kind of tires are you running?? That has alot to do with how it handles. Any large off road style tire will make it feel mushy or move around on you. I have BFG Radial T/A's on my trucks and they track pretty decent. They are only 225/70/15(?or about) on the front.
I'm pretty sure stablizers are mainly to subdue vibrations and shocks that wear out front end parts faster and maybe at the same time quiet down the steering wheel a bit. If your front end is good shape and you are on even half way decent roads you won't really know it's there but your tie rod ends, etc., will last longer as they are 'stabilized'.
It's not there to correct steering problems and won't change them much if at all.
