How exactly does a steering stabilizer shock benefit a truck? Are they practical only for a certain size of tire, certain off-road condition, etc?
To answer your question all I can do is give you my own personal opinion. In December I put 35/12.5/16's on my Excursion. I immediately noticed the tires are too big for the stock steering stabilizer. Those big tires jerk the wheel all around in any kind of off road trip. I haven't done alot of offroading so I haven't gotten real serious about getting a new one. I will before summer gets here.
Imagine hitting a curb at an angle at about 30 mph... without a stabilizer, the side of the tire would hit the curb and spin the steering wheel out of your hand. With a good stabilizer, it would slow the impulse... so you would feel a hard tug on the steering wheel, but it wouldn't be so hard & quick that you would lose your grip.
They are a necessity if you're going to off-road because they help you keep control of the steering wheel when you hit uneven terrain. On the pavement, they are not really needed, but help if you hit potholes or drive over curbs, etc.
The bigger the tire, the more leverage there's going to be, so you would probably want a stiffer stabilizer for a bigger diameter tire. Also, bigger tires weigh more, and a stabilizer helps with that too.
I just put one on my 86 F150 4x4 and I am pretty sure it saved my hands today. I was in a mud pit with deep ruts and a few times it nailed the ruts and the wheel stayed fairly easy to control rather then jumping out of my hands. I am just running 31's with no lift. If you do any off roading I would say go for it.
Thanks for the info, guys! I'll have 31" tires soon, and I do drive off-the-road. For about $50, you really can't go wrong with one I suppose.
