Alton your right there. The 300 six from ford is the toughest motor period, The 300 can be used and abused and used and never give up. I know people that that put that motor through shear torture and any other motor would have disintegrated. It didnt. That motor is the King of durablity period. Your friend must be impressed by your truck I would be.

I agree, that is a vernerable old motor. Doesn't do much to stir the blood but it sure has reliability firmly in it's corner.
Yeh Jeb I give the chevy guys a boost and then the Ford guys get on me immediatly. I cant win. Hey I try to please everybody. Next Ill praise dodge that wont last long either. Oh well.
Whose the administrator in this forum. We need to get 150ford kicked outta here. Just Joking.
You're right, my friend was very impressed with my truck. Until I totalled. Some idiot in a Nissan pulled out in front of me while I was doing 70. Loved that truck. 95 F150 I6 5sp rcab Flareside 4x2 Cherry-Red American Racing Wheels duals with cherry bombs REAL LOUD.
You can't think of Mercury, or the countless Bayliners that have 5.0 engines?
Neither Mercury nor Mercruiser are related to Ford. They are owned by Brunswick co. inc. That has always been a popular myth around here too. It shocks people to find out that Ford doesn't own Mercury marine and Chevy doesn't own Johnson marine. Mercruiser uses mainly Chevy power plants. All I ever see in Mercruiser is 4.3 chevy, 350 Chevy, and 496 Chevy. I never see a 5.0. The 4.3 has about knocked the 5.0 out of the market, because it is same h.p. and much lighter. There is a tricked out mercuriser 5.0, but its not popular because it is almost as heavy as the 350 and not nearly as strong. Ford doesn't make the 5.0 anymore do they? You will most definitely see it completely drop out of the lineup in near future.
I don't know man. I've seen more 350s go in and out of chevys. I don't see anything durable about old 350s. They are a powerhouse and some of the fastest trucks I've ever been around were 350 powered but when really put through it they didn't last very long at all. Friend of mine in school had a '84 swb 350. I helped him put 4 brand new blocks in that thing in about 2 years. And I put my old 300 I-six through the same killer driving habits he did hid. His truck would definitely blow my doors off but we were always using the ole ford to tow his back in after he would through a rod etc. I'll admit that this is an extreme case but just doesn't really convince me that the 350 was a durable engine.
The 350 Chevy will last as long as the 351 w in general. In my experience, the trick to making the 350 Chevy last is high volume oil pump, 15-40 oil, and clevite 77 bearings. I have built countless 350's and all of them that were stock rebuilds lasted 200,000 + miles or are still running fine below that mileage. Where so many people mess up with the 350 Chevy is when they use some of the abundant cheap aftermarket "junk" available for them. There are some greap aftermarket parts available for that engine and I am not talking about them. I am talking about the $150 engine overhaul kits you see everywhere for the 350. Basically, there is no major difference between 350 Chevy and 351w. They are close on stroke, bore. Crank, Rods, are similiar in both engines. Valvetrain is similiar to non ped. Fords. The heads are different, but that is no factor on durability. I just dont see the major difference. Put good parts in either engine its going over 200,000 miles, plain and simple.

I'll have to agree with everything you just said. Never really thought of the similiarities of the 350 and 351W. And when I really think about it I know several people having very similiar problems with both. Thanks for a technical reply. That's what I love about this site.

The 5.0 you are seeing the Mercury marine is most likely a old chevy 305. It only seems logical seeing as they use mostly chevy engines. The 3 ci difference from the Ford 302 doesn't make enough change in displacement to change the Liter meassurement.
