After my work truck oil usage became erratic I started to check things out. On one occasion it used a quart after just 1200 miles on a new oil change so I added a quart and it went back to the 2000 to 2500 miles, this went on for a couple of changes thats when I noticed that whenever the oil usage shot up I had failed to get the dipstick all the way down into the tube so I was drawing air down the tube through the crankcase and out the PVC valve along with oil vapor. This trucks dipstick really fits tight and is hard to push back into the tube. I changed oil and filled to the top (6.5 quarts) and it used 1 quart every 2500 miles. On my last change I looked a little further and was checking the PVC valve and it was fine, I then when over to the drivers side and wanted to check that hose for oil. I pulled on the hose to disconnect it and the fitting that goes into the valve cover came apart. I looked at it real close and noticed that where the to pieces came together and was supposed to be glues it only had about 25% of the surface glued. I used a high temp silicone and reattached the hose barb and now my oil usage appears to be about 1 quart ever 4000 miles. I guess that this motors really like a sealed crankcase
Interesting, vacuum in the crankcase certainly would keep down the amount of oil squeeking past the rings...
Lack of vacuum in the crankcase could conversely increase oil usage.
Good thinking!

PS: My '01 still doesn't use a drop between 3K mile changes. Seriously, I check it after shutting down for over an hour (or overnight). Check it often like that every few weeks. By the next oil change, it's still in the same spot - halfway between "full" and "add" w/6.0 qts of Castrol GTX 5w30
RV Puller, I appreciate your note! I will check mine in the morning. Mine is a 99 and has used oil from day one. Around 1500 miles per quart. I know the dip stick is all the way in. Now I am curious to look at the fitting you mentioned.
I have an '01 F250 V10 crew cab with a supercharger. The truck has almost 75K miles on it and I recently started using Royal Purple 5W20. Now I can go 4K miles between changes and not have to add a drop. When I was using Motorcraft 5W20 I would have to add almost a full quart between 3K mile oil changes. I'm sold on Royal Purple!
2004 F-250 4X4 with 3.73 gears. 18,000 miles and I use Syntec 5W20 and 820S filter with 5000 mile changes. I tow a 22' 4200 lb enclosed car trailer. Not a drop burned to this point.
I have owned new Ford cars and trucks since 1985. The only one I ever had that did burn oil was my 1989 Taurus. It averaged a quart per 3000 miles and went 202,000 miles before I sold it.
I've been changing at 6000miles with a UOA once in a while to make sure things are good using mobil 1 0w20, and burn virtually no oil during that period. I fill it to the upper line when I change it, and it's still more or less at the line when I empty. It's kind of hard to get an accurate repeatable reading with the POS dipstick these trucks have.
