Oil Pressure used to be around M or A on the NORMAL guage; now it is down between N and O. Any ideas how I can restore oil pressure without tearing the whole engine down? I change oil every 4000-4500 miles.
I have heard that products like SeaFoam can be used to clean out the block and restore the pressure - anybody have any input on these products?
You may have a gauge but it doesn't read oil pressure. It is only connected to a 5# oil pressure switch and a 20 ohm resistor fixes it at that position. A little corrosion on the connector and it may read a little different. You need to buy an external gauge to read pressure. Normal ptessure should be almost 60# at cold startup, 45# driving when hot and 20# at idle.
Just replace the sending unit. At that mileage, mine started acting up also. Part is cheap and remove/reinstall is easy.
Like previous poster said, sending unit is really a switch that measures wheather you have at least 5 PSI oil pressure or not. Gauge reading is set by a fixed value resistor in the gauge unit. Assuning the wire connection to the sending unit is OK (not corroded) and the sending unit switch is closed, gauge should read about half scale. If you want to prove it, remove the lead at sending unit and ground it with switch on engine off, gauge should read half scale.
If you really want to see a true pressure reading, then you need to modify the gauge/sending unit which is another story.
