Cobra Diesel Motorhome: what brand motor?
i saw a Cobra Diesel motorhome at a local consignment place. they are not very big on customer service and didn't have time to hunt down a sales guy. it's an older MH and it has a turbo-charged diesel. i got called back to work and didn't have time to snoop. anyone have one of these or know what motor brand it is.

What size is it, that will give you a good guess, if its small, like a 6.9 or a 7.3 it could be international, 6.2 would be a chevy/detroit - JUNK , could also be a cumings, probly an international, the best way to tell is see what size and if the stickers are still on the door column, under the hood, or on the valve cover of the motor. and if its yellow, its cat, many things play on it.

WELL, i called and the best they can tell me is that it's a DETROIT DIESEL. the saleman called the owner to get the info. they are not sure of the size; but when i saw it, it lookes pretty big. not that this means anything but the width of the valve covers were 6-8 inches across the top. there was a turbo at the rear of the engine that fed into a larg airbox on the top of the engine. the bottom of the airbox was then connected to intake manifold. it looked fairly clean, but i don't know anything about the quality of Detroit Diesels. i think they're good. anyone know? it sure is tempting, a 30+ foot class A motorhome with a turbo-charged diesel. they are asking 15K but everything is negotiable.

Well i guess it could be a good motor, i know the 6.2 were good for nothing other than a boat anchor, my uncle had one in a 3/4 ton van, perfect maintnance record, and at 125,000 roughly, broke the crank into two and sent 3 pistons into the oil pan, no reason at all, no load, going down hill? and ive heard many horror storys about the 6.2, but nothing about the biggen,

You saying there was an "air box" on it would negate an 8.2.
What colour was the engine? If it was blue, then yeah, it's an 8.2 "Fuel Pincher", it's about 500 cubic inches, and not a diesel conversion of a 502.
If the engine looks green in colour then it is most likely an 8V71.
Also, the valve covers on an 8.2 were closer to 4 or 5 inches across, not the 6 - 8 you specify.
Also, the "air box" you are referring to is actually a blower. The air box is actually under the blower, and there is no intake manifold.

I worked on a school bus that had a non-turbo 8.2 gm. It looked a lot like a detoit, but was definetely a four stroke, with no blower. They have a standard-looking v8 intake manifold, just no carb sitting on it. It was a pretty popular engine in the 50 and 60 chassis, but absolutely nutless, especially the non-turbo ones.

Just a dumb question, but is it a diesel pusher? If so, then it most likely isn't an 8.2.
But I was thinking about it a bit more today, and I seem to remember the valve covers being a bit bigger than I said. Is it a front engine motorhome? Maybe try and get some pictures up. Does it look like it could fit into a pickup? Or do you think it would be more at home in a Kenworth?
You'll probably be able to find out sooner than us telling you what it is, so let us know. Without seeing a picture of it, I can't tell you for sure.

it's a front engine motorhome. it could have been a V-6. i remeber the turbo was at the rear of the engine. it looked like the output of the turbo fed into a steel airbox at the top of the engine which then fed down into the engine (i thought they were always called intake manifolds, sorry). i have a busy day friday, but i'll try to stop by there on monday and might even give it a spin on the freeway. i'll post more info as i get it. thanks for all the responses.
