aside from you diesel heads what octane gas do you pump and what do you drive?
i have a 94' f150 5.0L i pump cheap unleaded regular. i have two tanks and so one day i pumped regular in one tank and supah dupah mega supreme in the other, and switching back and forth from the different tanks i could tell a BIG differnce, man i wish i could pump the good stuff everytime, but filling up already costs me 45-50 bucks each time. and with supreme plus at over 2 bux a gallon that'd be killer on a broke college student such as myself
High test WILL give you slightly better mileage and more hp...
but at what cost... already proven that the loss of effeciency is much less than the savings produced by going with the lower grade...
for everyday driving I put the least octane in that will not make for pinging...
ON newer cars they have a knock sensor, but on slightly less newer cars.. beware, because once you HEAR pinging, it's been knocking for a while already :-)
And the only reason your car says 93 octane or more is so the hp and fuel mileage will meet the manufacturers advertised values....
BUT, if you've put a chip in or supercharger or ??? that MUST have premium... don't be using regular...
i drive a 95 F-150 with the 5.8L and just pump the plain 'ol 87 octane. 92 might give better mileage, and a tish more HP...but at the price right now, i dont really care. if i want mileage ill buy a honda (NOT) and if i want power ill hop it up with performance mods.
yea, the gas price kinda defeats the purpose of pumping higher octane for better mileage. but man, if gas prices ever go down to how they used to be (keep your fingers crossed) then ill start pumping higher octane....... or maybe regular, hehehe, maybe when i graduate college and get a job and everyones flying around in jet cars then maybe gas prices will go down and ill pump higher octane
I run 87 octane in my 2001 F150, 96 Windstar and my 77 F150 with a 460.
I run 93 octane in my 88 5.0 LX Stang because I run the timing higher which makes more power (proven at the race track) to keep it from pinging.

but the price of gas cant go down then....if everybody is flying around in jet cars, regular old gasoline will be so out to date it will be inpossible to come by. so when u do find some it'll be like $50/gal.
For a regular old street machine run whatever the manufacturer designed it for. In those vehicles running higher octane will decrease your fuel mileage so you pay a LOT more at the pump.
Running with a chip or in a high performance vehicle with altered timing etc it will require adjusting the octane rating for the engine.
whatever the cheapest is here in Nebraska they actually added a tax on the 87 stuff to get people to buy the 90 stuff that has 10% ethnoal in it to use the corn grown here in nebraska
Trucks in sig. I run 89 when I can afford it, and always run it when it's hot out or if I will be working the engine towing/hauling. Otherwise I run 87. On my 2strokes I run 110 octane race gas with synthetic mix oil. The generator gets 87 or 92, depending on if there is a 4stroke bike along on the trip that will be sharing the gas jug. Leftover gas in the jug goes in the truck tank for the ride home. Any leftover old pre-mixed 2stroke gas that has been sitting for a while gets used as a general purpose solvent in the garage, especially good for cleaning dirt bike chains.
