Some trucks run forever without as much maintenance as others.

I should let WXBoy respond to this, but I simply can't help myself .

Yeah Rich he does have experience with diesels. Both Ford and Dodge from what I've read. I remember reading a few of his posts awhile back when he and his father were buying their first Cummins Dodge. Being a Ford guy through and through, he was openly detesting his pops decision to fellow Ford members on this site, and was recieving support for his convictions as well. If you read many of his recent posts you see a trend taking place - the longer they have owned the Dodge, -the more he's grown to like it and respect it . And not just the Cummins engine either- but the whole truck as well. Now you will often see this; WXBoy-> <- other enthusiasts, about the Cummins Dodge...lol. That motor will make you a believer, trust me I know. There really is nothing that can compare with it. The 7.3L was good, and the 6.0L seems to be working itself out. The Duramax is a fine motor as well IMO, but that Cummins still has almost as much displacement with only six cylinders. The inline configuration is simple and in itself is more suited for low end torque (true of gas or diesel) I've seen the pictures comparing the Cummins rod with those of the PSD and Duramax. Considering that the pistons, lifters, valves, and crank are all in purportion to the rods, it is easy to see that the Cummins has far stronger internals than the others do, and they are better balanced as well. I can't say that these facts matter all that much in these GVWR/GCWR applications, but they are still facts nonetheless.

WXBoy has also had a few good things to say about GM - very few, but he did nonetheless. He likes SLA in comparision with Ford's dated I beam front end - and I agree with him.

All these diesels should last well over 300,000 miles without a hiccup, as long as they are properly maintained. My father owned two vehicles in 1972. A 1972 Chevy C20 with 350 engine and SM465 4 speed, and a 69 Caddy. In 1979 he had the same truck and bought a new Ford LTD station wagon. In 1985 he replaced the station wagon with a new Ford van, and had the same truck. In 1986 he finally decided to buy a new truck - by this time the Chevy had over 489,000 miles on it, and was pretty shot out. He bought a new 86' Dodge D250 318 / NP435 4speed - and complained that there was too much plastic in it, and that the only manual transmission on the lot also had AC in it. It was all my mother could do to convince him to get a new truck to go with the new van we had. Trucks were not a status symbol to him, as they are to many people today, it was a work tool- he would have much rather used the money for a downpayment on a new lincoln car, but the 9000.00 price tag, along with the fact that the Chevy truly had no more life left in it, finally convinced him to just be done with it and move on. That Dodge had seen some severe use, and just died about 3 years ago - my brother crashed it.

Wrote a friggen book.
Thank you for the reply my intentiontion was not to start any trouble but just dig for facts behind bias especially the 500,000 mile issue. I've never had a problem with the Cummins motor and the facts you've stated before are exactly why you see more Dodge trucks in truck pulls then any other brand. I don't really consider myself brand loyal but when I bought the Dmax I was looking for a dependable diesel with an automatic. Granted the Duramax is a relativily new diesel motor. There are plently of people running well over the 100,000 mile mark on that motor with now issue at all - so I was trying to find out if these were facts or just a little brand bashing. I guess time will tell..

Sinister did a pretty good job summing it up... But just for the record: My father is the owner of a material handling equipment company, and I have worked with him on jobs in the past. Both gas and diesel engines. Also, we've used Ford and Dodge diesels in our work trucks. The Ranger you see in my avatar is simply my daily driver. I've owned three other full-size and compact Ford Trucks, and a GM truck as well. I have lots of experience with all of the "big 3" and if you hear me brand bashing, it's because I've had trouble with the product myself, or I know someone who has. I can back up any of my claims.

We have a friend who makes deliveries to us every so often. He drives a 1995 Dodge with the Cummins, and last time we saw him he had 526,000 miles on the odometer. Only part that's been replaced is the water pump. If you see a Duramax with that kind of mileage, it's been rebuilt. I am a Ford fan, but fact are facts. And from my experience, I'd take the Cummins diesel engine any day of the week. Sorry for the long post.

I like ford trucks, but there cars have sucked since the mid 1970s imo. I still cannot figureout why ford cannot make a reliable transmission. In the past 10 years i know of at least 20 vehicles that have been stranded do to bad transmissions. Guess what? They were all fords... I consider myself very luck for getting a 100k out of my tauras.

Thank you for the reply. I just wanna clear up your quote that you said CTD's regually turn 525,000 miles on original parts is basically A friend of your that's makes deliveries? Also I see you have experience with Dodge and Ford diesel motors - both companies have produced good motors in the past - no argumnet there. What are you basing your claim that the Duramax is a cheap Isuzu motor? Where are you drawing this fact from? Is it from experience, something you heard, read, word of mouth?

Not trying to argue with anybody just looking for something to base your claims on. That's great that you think that Cummin's is the best diesel motor - that's an opinion that's based on some pretty hard-core facts. But there are those arguable facts for each companies motor that it may also be the best.

Best regards

elemint, you say Ford doesn't make a reliable transmission? I disagree, my transmission in my truck has been very dependable. I have 135,000 miles on it, and it sat in a field for 18 moths, and I've never even checked the fluid. I'd call that reliable. The only Ford tranny that I ever had trouble with was the E4OD in a Ranger that I had back in the day. Couldn't keep a tranny in that.

I have never heard of a Cumapart turning over 500,000 miles on original parts, except for the one I just read about. It must be this area, but Dodge is really the bottom of the barrel here, even the Cummins. I'd still have one before I had a Chevrolet, though.

Oh yeah, there's names for everything. I heard Cumapart from every diesel mechanic that I ever talked to, and I thought it was funny.
I also think that Powerjoke is funny, too. Duracrap could flow better, though, but it's better than just calling it the real name.
