12mpg empty sounds a little low to me, of course I'm no expert. Never did like the 92'-97' Chevys, very ugly, very crude, tiny frames, lackluster powerplants and autos just to name a few. Whatever floats his boat I guess.

I know, but I'm not talking about the new 6.4.He have international diesel,1992,and this truck has a very bad mileage, around 12 MPG.And he want to sell this truck and buy used Chevy, around 1992-1997,because ( as he sad ) the Chevy has better mileage.

If your friend doesn't want to buy another Ford, I'd tell him to look at a Dodge just because of the Cummins. The 12V I6 with the 5Spd manual would be better than Chevys 90's detroit diesels IMO. The 90s detroits didn't make much power at all and didn't have much power potential. The 12V is a hp and tq lovers wet dream when modded.

What about dropping a 12V or 24V cummins in his 92' Ford.

No,he don't have $$$,and not interesting to buy a diesel,he is looking truck around $2500-$3000.Dodge,diesel 90's will cost much more. For him much importent not power and tq,but fuel mileage. And Cevy is only one way, because they have best mileage in the 90's and now.

I average 16 to 17.5 MPG on my '04 FX4 F150 with the 5.4 and it has 102K miles on it now with out one problem, just normal maintinence. Put 1st brakes on it at around 95K. I have no probrem it with mileage as this motor will tow more and last longer than the 5.3 Chebbie

I hope he's not talking about the Chevy gassers from that period? My friend had a 97 Z-71 regular cab with the 5.7 and he was lucky to get 14 or 15 with his. Usually around 10-12 mpg. If he wants a diesel he needs to get the Cummins 12v as mentioned above. They get the best diesel mileage.

Honestly, yes he will get better miles per gallon if he chooses the V6 Chevy Silverado. Did he indicate he wanted a V8, I am sure all the V8 of that time got crappy mileage.

A TBI 5.7 when driven nicely is good for 18+ MPG even in an extended cab truck I've done this on several occasions. The Chevrolet gassers of this era were all good for 3 or 4 mpg better than a Ford or Dodge with a similar engine.

The GM diesels from were quite interesting, a lot of people poo poo them for not being powerhouses like the Cummins and PS but they really weren't designed to be. I feel GM had it right with these engines, they were powerful enough for what you'd use a 1/2 or 3/4 ton for very economical and most importantly you could actually get them in a 1/2 ton

WOW a diesel geared towards ECONOMY......imagine that Detroit should be doing this TODAY

Agreed a 5.3 in a regular cab 4x2 1/2 ton Chevrolet/GMC truck will get 20mpg on the hwy anywhere you decide to drive it and yet run like a raped ape when you step on it especially with the tow package

let's face it Ford's gas truck engines have been also rans since the 70's down on both power and MPG
