i was driving with my friend in my 67 f100 swb stepside and a stock 352 and my other friend wanted to race me in his 3.8 L mustang with cold air and underdrive pulleys so we found a place slightly downhill and started smoked my tires all the way through 1st shifted to second chirped and was ahead by a car length and shifted to third at 75 and he then blew by me. we were racing in a quarter mile andi was just wondering what i could do to up my prformance and/or win. i was thinking about a carb. only have 160$ please help
Only CHEAP quick way to go faster than someone else
Buy yourself a used 100 hp kit and bolt it on. Just a shot will get you ahead. BUT....you have to be careful. That old 352 will show you what it's made of it you get too greedy .
Nitrous is not to be taken lightly, it can destroy things quicker than anything else too.
Most small kits are pretty reliable for quick bursts.
You want headers. Stock exhaust logs just plain suck. Install dual exhaust with the headers. Then get a 4 barrel intake, the edelbrock performer RPM is a good one for racing. Then get a cam, like the Crane 343901 or Crane 343941. Do all this and you'll most likely win (once you get the money of course).
Since you only have $160, do the headers. This will make the biggest difference. I would suggest the Hedman headers from Jegs, they're $132. This'll give you enough for a junkyard 4-barrel intake and carb, depending on the yard owner.
I just put new 8mm wires and pertronix electronic iginition on it today, i am looking for a set of jets for the stock two barrell right now, and i am gonna put a 45,000 volt flamethrower coil on it also. that should help me out a lot
You are getting hit with the wonderful world of aerodynamics bud. My buddy had a 2002 GT and I could beat him up to about 70MPH. After that it was like he hit the nitrous button. That mustang you are racing probably runs mid 15s depending on his driving skills. You will need at least a better cam along with all the other recommendations to beat him I would say.

He was racing a 3.8l V6...do you think 15s are typical for a V6 Stang?
I still think traction is what he needs. Like Sean is saying, aerodynamics are not in your favor. Get ahead early with torque and traction.
Lock up the rear and get some good rubber. Spinning through first is no way to win a race. Imagine how much more ahead you would have been if you'd have hooked up.
Oops, just reread your budget. You might be able to lock up the rear axle with $160 if you know where to look and do some work yourself.
Like what was mentioned in the reply that Rat made.... I picked up a little whe I took off my tail gate{less drag} but it looked liked S--t to me..So I put the gate back on and put a cover on the bed!!! I wish ya luck bud... but for $160 bucks its going to be hard too do!! Russ
Ratsmoker it depends on what mustang was used since a pre 99 3.8 made 150 horsepower and after 99 they had 190 hp. 190hp will run high 15s and 150 hp is high 16s low 17s. I would have busted out the cheap tricks such as ditching the snorkel, or turning the lid over, advance the timing, ditch mufflers if there are any. But headers probally would be a good place to start and something i need to do. that ignition will help but he will need more to win. I finish at about 78 or 80 in the quarter mile and as said the aerodynamics are not good for the trucks.
Yeah i put that new ignition system on today, as i described above, I was ahead by a car length even while i was spinnin through first, and as a shifted two second he pulled next to my rear fender, because of the long throw on the column, but i jumped out again by a car length, and then after I shifted to third and about at 75mph he passed me, but i stayed up with him and then shut it off at about 85Mph, so u think the new ignition will push me ahead

Sounds like your truck is running good, you just need more of a good thing.
More fuel on the top end and like G says, something to anchor your back tires for a good launch. I had a 57 with 3-2brls that would take off like mad on the 2-brl then pin you back in the seat when the other two opened up down the road. Had to learn some serious pedal control to keep it competetive, other than that it was a wonderful smoke show.....
