Question Instrument cluster part numbers?

Hi - Can anyone make sense of the part numbers for 2004-2006 instrument clusters? In particular, I am interested in the basic XL type with just the speedometer (no tach). I know 2007/2008 clusters are different because they have the TPMS LED, but the ones for 2004-2006 look all the same to me but have several different part numbers. Does anyone know the differences? Can I put a 2004 cluster in a 2006 without any problems? I am not looking to upgrade and I already know mileage needs to be accounted for

Presumably some of them are FX4 with no shift indicator. Beyond that I don't know.

I don't know if TPMS matters? ie I don't know if it was just added to a vacant terminal or everything shifted around (physically, wiring) to accommodate for it.

If you put an 07-08 cluster in an 04-06, the TPMS light is permanently on because 04-06 models don't have TPMS sensors. Otherwise the cluster works fine, so wiring I think must be the same (just added to a vacant terminal). I of course don't want the TPMS light on all the time so need to stick with 04-06 (unless I want to de-solder the TPMS LED or pull-up resistor)

You can easily disable TPMS in the ABD with Forscan. I've personally done it in an '07 (mine) and '08 (my wife's). I've detailed it here somewhere. You gotta convert binary to hex, swap a digit and convert back to binary. Sounds WAY more complicated than it is.

I've also done an '06 Expy and '08 Mountaineer in similar fashion

edit: or hex to binary. Need more coffee

you also need to watch for what HVAC system you have.

Well that's kind of the point of the question about part numbers - how does anyone know what's interchangeable and what isn't?
Sure, an XL will be different from a Lariat, but would all XL's have the same HVAC as each other? And if so then does that make all 04-06 XL clusters the same? I don't know the answer to that.

Either way you want to transfer ABD. In that case I'm not sure HVAC matters?

I bought an XLT cluster on ebay, transferred ABD and all was good. This was to gain the tach. But yes, I believe I tried to stay with '07/8 clusters when shopping for my '07 XL

I understand the question about part numbers but I don't think there's a comprehensive list out there like that.

Also I've got my old '07 XL cluster if you want to play with it. IIRC the LCD backlight was out and I believe it was GHOST-DOMING the previous owner as all bulbs were removed (interior and cargo) when I got the truck. I replaced the bulbs and it never did it to me.

Any used cluster you buy you should just expect the LCD won't backlight and you'll get the ghost dome. It's more common than not on ALL these trucks. So, try to fix yourself or send off to a speedo repair outfit (I like Texas Speedometer out of Arlington TX)

Troubleshooting is tough without a schematic. I can find wiring diagrams but that's only limited help. I am guessing schematics are not accessible to John Q Public?
