Transmission Temp probe/gauge in E4OD?

I am trying to install an Autometer 3351 Mechanical Transmission Temperature gauge in a 1989 F350 7.3L E4OD. I routed the probe to the test point on the driver's side of the transmission (location that several posts have recommended), and there's no way that big probe is going to fit into that little test port. What gauges/probe are you guys using? Or am I trying to plug it into the wrong hole? Is there another temperature location on the E4OD that will fit this probe/fitting?
thanks!
JM

Thanks! Looks like I originally ordered the wrong gauge kit. The Autometer mechanical 3351 has a 1/2" NPT, the correct size for the port is 1/8" NPT. I should have dug a little deeper before ordering.

Oh, I bet you could get an 1/2 npt extension, like this:
Amazon Amazon
Pick the right size, to make sure the whole probe you have there fits inside it.

Then an 1/2 to 1/8 NPT reducer
Amazon Amazon

Oh, that's backwards. My bad. You'd need a 1/2 female to 1/8 male....... ah this way:
Amazon Amazon

It might look kinda funny under there, sticking out so far, but I suppose it wouldn't hurt anything and it should work just fine, I would think.
Perhaps not ideal, but if what you have isn't returnable, I'd probably try it.

That's the right place, but the wrong sensor. Most sensors will thread into that hole.

Received and installed the correct kit. For me, the Autometer "long" sending unit: 2252 (in the 8457 kit), worked with no issues. I used a straight punch of the same diameter as the probe on the sending unit to check the clearance depth of the test port. Even when bottomed out, the sending unit still has 1/2" of clearance. I have no idea if there's moving parts in that area, but just parked, I had plenty of clearance. I've read several posts that say you need the short sending unit, and everyone has heard that some guy somewhere broke the long one, but I wasn't able to find any first hand accounts of failures but did find several that said that the 2252 worked for them. Mine could self-destruct tomorrow, but for now it works. If it does fail, I'll definitely come back on here and update this post.
thanks!

There are no parts in that port, moving or stationary.

Thanks! From the few diagrams I found, it looked like there was nothing behind the test port, thanks for verifying! Below are the depths of the probe and where the punch bottomed out in the test port.
