I used XL-12 a few years back. Not sure what I would put in now after all of the changes from Ford and based on what Mr. Y2KW57 has posted in the past.
After Mobil changed the spec for their Synthetic ATF from Mercon to Mercon V, I stopped using it in the transfer case, since Ford's updated guidance from Motorcraft Service strongly recommended not to use Mercon V in the transfer case, but to instead use Transfer Case Fluid XL-12.
Some years later, Ford ceased offering Transfer Case Fluid XL-12, recommending Mercon LV in the transfer case instead. Unfortunately, Ford's recommendations are inconsistent and conflicted, since elsewhere within Motorcraft Servicen Ford stated not to use Mercon LV in the transfer case.
Ford does not adequately identify or distinguish between different transfer case designs when describing "transfer case."
I had replaced the transfer case fluid when I acquired the truck, but don't remember what I used, this confirms that I must of used Mercon V at the time, so I'm switching it today to Mercon LV, has about 40k'ish miles on the fluid so might as well change it.
I have had redline hightemp atf in mine for past 20-30k and been working fine. Put it in manual trans last time I serviced it and just bought a whole case so in the transfer case it went to. lol
