I'm gonna bet the diesel fuel knows when to boom better than a sparkplug ever would, and in a diesel engine it's all about the BOOM.

In artillery school, one of the questions in our written test was "How many spark plugs are there in the diesel engine of the prime mover?"
Those that got it wrong had to run five laps of the parade ground.
