Broken teeth on ring gear...
Ok, great information. I had no clue that this was possible. I'll do some research into this more. Thanx again brother. I enjoy learning new stuff and how to do it as well👍
you are not looking for a Solid Locking Diff, like for Rock Crawling when only one tire has grip, the other is up in the air.
the Detroit TrueTrac is a good option.
that is what I installed on my Excursion.
It senses when one wheel slips a bit, then it locks up both axles solid until they are both traveling at the same speed, then it unlocks.
I have had it for over a year now, and several thousand miles, no issues ever on dry pavement.... I got my proof it works one day, when climbing up a very muddy driveway to my sister's farm.....
the tracks showed one tire slipping, then both pulling, then one slips, and again they both pull.... the truck never slowed down, it just went up the hill pretty as you please.
Had it not been installed, I would have had to engage 4x4 to get out of the mud hole.
the Tracks it left

edit...noticed you were talking about this gearset in the original rear end. That's a lot more work than what I described above....and I don't know what you'd be gaining other than a lot of extra work. Setting pinion preload, pinion depth, obtaining the correct "pattern" on the hypoid gears, etc....it's a bunch of work.
