That same friend gave me a bunch of turkey and cheese sandwiches last night (the kind you pop in the microwave) and tamale and chili dinners that also go in the microwave. He goes to a weekly food drive and picks up whatever is available.
In San Francisco, the politicians are trying to ban those trailers and recreational vehicles on city streets. The home owners are tired of homeless camping at their front door.
It's mostly in less desirable, less police enforcement neighborhoods. There's already high crime and gang violence. Now you have homeless at your curb.
Truthfully, there are limited enforcement resources. Homelessness is a social issue. Not a crime. The police department is not able to expend finite resources to find code infractions just because poor people are an eyesore. You simply cannot write tickets, knowing that they will go unpaid, to creat bench warrants so that you can go back to arrest. Since they didn't pay the tickets, they won't be able to make bail. Then impound the vehicle they are sleeping in, knowing that they can never pay the tow and storage fees. Whereby causing a poor person to lose their place to sleep and whatever personal property.
My liberal heart is not bleeding enough, that I am willing to take a homeless person to my house and let him or her sleep in my couch. That would solve the problem. If everyone took a homeless person home. Overnight. No more homeless.
It's certainly a controversial topic. We all know what the problems are. Poverty. Lack of housing. Drug use. Mental illness. It's a simple solution. Provide real housing. Not a cot in a warehouse shelter. People need a place to live. Just like most of us have. A front door with a lock. A bathroom. A kitchen. Only then, can we deal with getting help with employment and healthcare. But nobody wants this in their backyard. Nobody wants a housing facility on their block. And nobody wants to pay for it.
I think that we need to be more creative with our resources. .If we can find real estate and funding for sports arenas, we can find a place to build housing.
It should be a crime, or at the VERY LEAST it should be taboo again. If it's a crime, take them to Jail. Gives them a home, and a disincentive to be a troll living in someone's front yard.
It is so bad that Santa Clara has a ban on people living in an RV trailer on their own property... I read a Winery owner has allowed his vineyard manager and his family to live in the winery owner's RV since 2013. Abd is being fined every day for his kindness. That is ridiculous in my opinion. So is citing people who park their RV's on the street. At least they are not sleeping on park benches or tents. They are one step above that. But nobody wants them parking in front of their house. Nobody wants a homeless shelter in their neighborhood either. Or a prison for that matter. can't have it both ways. They scream to get the homeless off the streets, but they don't want them in RV's or a shelter anywhere near them.

There's not even a prayer of enough room in jails (or even enough jails) to house them all.

Weird how this wasnt a problem growing up. Napa State was open but there were No homeless peeps. NONE Hate to bring politics in this but it sure seems Dems brought this about with their programs
