Adaptive steering?

So my 2006 rig has a used 2016 6.7/6.2 steering gearbox that's getting a bit loosey goosey for my taste so I was planning on purchasing a brand new unit from Ford, but I decided to check out the parts places I've used in the past before I drop $1200 CAD and low and behold there's a rear end wrecked 2022 F350 gasser(2021 build date)with only 17,000kms and the steering box from it is only $230 so of course I'm super interested, but not sure if it has adaptive steering or not so I looked up comparability issues and the gearbox itself on multiple parts sites and as far as I can tell the gearboxes themselves are no different and the adaptive steering crap is above the gearbox on the shaft itself and SHOULD be perfectly fine as a replacement on my rig as there's no difference between 2016-2022 units. Anyone know enough about this to chime in here and tell me if I'm dead wrong or not?

Thanks

I sent an email to RedHead asking what the main difference is between a 2011-2016 gear box without adaptive steering and a 2017-2022 box with adaptive steering, but so far I don't see any indication there's any difference on the units themselves so wait and see what they say.

So far the only difference I've seen between a 2016 and 2022 box is the 2016 has 4 turns to lock where the 2022 has 3.75 which I don't think is a big deal and I believe the input shaft to steering shaft is somewhat different, but nothing an angle grinder can't remedy.

Well just confirmed with RedHead and my local Ford dealership that a 2022 gearbox will 100% fit into a 2016 with no issues and a 2016 will fit a 2022, but the adaptive steering will deactivate or just not be functional.

Quite the contrary! Knowing that a 2006 can take a number of later steering boxes is valuable information! Thanks for sharing your research and do post up how the (almost) new box feels when you get it installed...

Not sure about 03-04 years, but 05-07 trucks can run pretty much any 08-22 Superduty steering box as long as they replace the stock rag joint with a universal joint from Borgeson. 05-07 boxes are 4.25 turns to lock and the majority of 08-22 are 3.75 turns to lock so loose a SLIGHT bit of turning radius, but not noticeable at all really and a small price to pay for incredibly straight steering and handling.

My current 2016 box is still good enough for now and I'm not even running any steering stabilizerers and I can still drive/steer with one finger lol.

Here's the Borgeson u joint btw.

I don't know if you can go back and change the thread title but if you could, and make it something like: "steering box updates for '05+ Super Duties" - this would then be a thread for the Tech Folder!

The lock to lock designation doesn’t tell you that it doesn’t rotate as far (degrees), it tells you how many steering wheel rotations it takes to go full left rotation to right.

A 4:1 lock to lock compared to a 2:1 means a higher ratio, twice as many turns, and therefore less force to make a turn then the lower ratio.

Not sure about it's sticky worthy, but anyone with a 05-07 Superduty who can find a low mileage 16-22 steering box can do the update/swap for quite a bit less than what a refurbished RedHead/BlueTop/stock OEM costs. 16-22 box+3 new bolts+Borgeson u-joint and Bob's your uncle. I'm on my second used 2016 steering box now and it's just fine for regular day driving, but before I go towing cross country and diving through the VERY twisty roads on BC's Sunshine Coast I'll be replacing it with a '22' unit with only 17k kms on it

Considering this would be your third 16-22 steering box, not sure it's a selling point.

The first one had over 350k kms IIRC and pretty sure it was adjusted previously to my install then I did an adjustment and it didn't last long because of that and like I said the second one I'm on now has 140k kms on it by now and steers/handles just fine and will most likely last quite a bit longer, but I want to go with a much newer unit just for piece of mind and to show that a '22' adaptive steering box can swap to a 05-07 truck with no issues.
