Do I have a Bronco Transmission?

Recently purchased a 1972 Ford F250 floor shift 4-speeds forward with reverse in the upper right. Long story short....didn't like the kludgy shift **** they had on it so I took it off. Turns out it was something that was cross-threaded onto the shift lever, and I have been trying to find a know to fit ever since. The threads on the shifter are not damaged as a result of the cross-threaded ****. Trying to match the threads I find that 3/8" dia is too small, 1/2" dia is too large, 7/16" dia seems to be just right. Thread is coarse but -14 is too fine. Then I came across Super Scout Specialists that offer a 7/16 - 13, which seems to be what I need. What this would suggest is that I have a Bronco transmission behind my Ford 390. Is that possible? Or is what I think a 390 something different? And how do I find out?

Thanks! I'm a newbie here so if I have overstepped any bounds, I apologize in advance.

Welcome to FTE.

Do you have a picture of the transmission? Or is there anything on the case you can post?

You may have an "early" T18 with the old T98 top cover which gives you reverse over and up.

All 352s and 360s became 390s on sale day, so unless you have measured the stroke, you never really know for sure.

Thanks for the quick response!

Would the VIN help you determine? Also, my primary objective right now is to get a shifter **** that fits, so I was wondering about the reasonableness of the 7/16 -13 thread. Do you think my conclusion about thread specs is correct?

The warranty plate on the driver door will have the transmission code, if it's still there and original.

No idea on the threads....

It appears the T18 used a pressed on ball with splines on the stick.

You tried 3/8-24 but it worked for this guy:

***** for the trans with R over and up--3/8-24:

But this guy has 7/16-14:

The warranty plate on the door is still there and hasn't been disturbed, and I'm pretty sure the door is original to the truck. The "TRANS" code is "F". I've done a little more digging and will need to get under the truck to look at the bolt confirguration to see what it is. While I'm under there, is there anything stamped on the case that could be an additional clue?

Also, the thread pattern on the shifter is definitely larger than 3/8" and coarser than 24, or 18, and slightly coarser than 14.

Thanks for your quick help and interest in my little dilemma!

Borg-Warner T-18's were mostly used in 2wd Fords until 79 when they were also used in 4wd's. The case will have a B-W cast into it. Np 435's were used in 4wd's. Also T-18/T-19's were also used in Jeeps, and IH trucks and Scouts. The Reverse shift pattern changed in 79. Read this and contact Novak for parts:

Are you looking to just put a **** in it or the one you have with the right shift pattern?

I replaced my T18 4x2 in my 81 F100 with a later NP435, reverse is right and back to the seat on both.
Anyway the T18 had a splined **** the NP435 threaded and I only had the T18 **** that was partly split at the bottom.

My fix was to fill the **** with JB Weld and let it set up good a few days.
I then drilled and tapped with the same thread count the NP435 stick had.
To finish off the bottom a put a bolt in the **** and chucked it up in my drill press and used sand paper to finish off the bottom and then hit is with a little black paint.

My 72 F-100 T-18 had a threaded shifter ****. I think they went to moulded and splined ***** in 79 when they went to T-18's for 4wd's instead of NP 435's. The reverse pattern for T-18's changed in 79, from Novak info. NP 435's always had reverse down.

I just thought I would close the loop with everyone here, regarding my search for a shift **** for my 1972 F250. Turns out the transmission is indeed an Borg Warner F18 and the threads are indeed 7/16 -13. I finally found a **** that fits perfectly, from a site dealing in Bronco parts. And it is 7/16 -13.

Thanks for everyone's help and advice!
