Folks! I need some fast advice. I got into my bronco (351ci; auto trans 4x4), started it up, and attemped to shift out of park into rev. Something in the shift mechanism gave way, and the shift handle just moves up and down sloppily, without shifting out of park.
pop the hood and check out the linkage. a pin or coder key might have jumped out . or your collum shifter might be shot. Best bet would be to trace the system out .
had this happen on a 93 E4OD it was the shift tube in the column. its made out of pots metal but very cheep from ford and the one here stocks them so it must be a little common. i don’t know what year you have but if you REALLY need to shift it i can tell you how but its dangerous.
I dove in, and found that indeed the shift tube housing was broken into two pieces. And, yes, my local Ford dealer indeed stocked replacements! Not a particularly difficult repair.
It was fun shifting the tranny by hand under the dash with the parking break on, tho!
