E4OD no drive nor reverse
I gots a 1990 F350 with a transamission problem thats got me stumped
Two weeks ago the transamission failed attempting to take off from a dead stop. There was a loud pop and then no power transmitted to the driveshaft at all
Additionally, the transamission started making a growl like a sound of a hydraulic pump low on fluid, in all PRNDL positions. No reverse and no forward drive.
I assumed the front pump or converter was toast, so I pulled the unit from the vehicle and completely disassembled it.I pulled the front pump halves apart and see no damage. Removed the pressure regulator valve from the pump and likewise no damage. Looking inside the drained converter, also see no damage. No other problems were apparent elsewhere in the transamission.
Unit was professionally rebuilt and upgraded about 40K miles ago, gave good service until failing suddenly. Any idea on where to look? I am certain its either a hydraulic or mechanical problem up in the front somewhere I reckon.
Theres no transfer case and I ruled out the axle and driveshaft, since it holds park on a hill. Also, when the engine is running in drive or reverse, theres no abnormal noise at all coming from the drivetrain except the groaning pump noise being emitted from the transamission. This noise is occuring while the engine is running and the trans is in any PRNDL position, and raised in tone proportional to engine rpms
The stator is freewheeling inside the converter, when I engage it using the stator support shaft. Practically no resistance in either direction
It does this both empty and full of fluid
According to my research, this is no bueno and indicative of a broken overrunning clutch
When the transamission broke, I was pulling a 5000lb trailer. Too much drag for a broken stator to get moving even a little bit? Seeming plausible to me

Had the same thing happen to me a few years ago during a 2-3 upshift getting a 6000 lb. load up to speed on an interstate on-ramp. I was unsure of what happened but I was going fast enough already for the torque converter clutch to apply when I let off of the accelerator and I drove another 15 miles. Stopped at the stop sign at the next exit - done. No movement.
Nothing broken on disassembly. No metal in anything (miraculously). Threw a new torque converter in it and it's been happy since.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
it is the long nose variant, 1.9" hub length, aluminum w 3 planet gears
I can get another for 75 bux but would rather upgrade to a steel 4 gear type
I see there are kits in a couple different sites which claim to be some retrofit update that includes a matching input shaft
Anyone ever use these? Any known issues? I hate the idea of puttin' an aluminum planet carrier back on there.
edit: I found a related thread that answers my question https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...cracked-2.html
thanks guys
