2001 Ex 130000 miles. Was running well. Went to start and had a strong pull on the battery, then started. Check engine light came on shifter started flashing, would pull in reverse but very little in any forward gear. Threw codes like crazy, P0743, P0755, P1747, P0443, P0135, P055. Cleared all codes, truck fired up ran well, threw no codes but will pull in reverse only, very hard pull in any forward gear.
This happened a year ago, sent it to Ford after six weeks they discovered the clutch solenoid pack was bad and replaced it for $1565.
Now I will say vehicle ran and drove great for a year. I would on a rare occasion have a growl when starting from a dead stop. Sounded similar to a brake binding but I would let it roll to a stop on pavement and it would roll smoothly to a stop and start off smoothly.
I would hate to think that the clutch pack would go out that quickly.
I'm looking for some definition of what it's doing. You said, "will pull in reverse only, very hard pull in any forward gear." I have no idea what that means.
One, there are feed bolts located between the main valve body and the case. They can become loose, and that bleeds off pressure that should be applying the clutches. If those are not the problem, burnt up clutches are the problem.
It can't be the pump, because reverse works fine. It can't be the torque converter because reverse works fine. It can't be the solenoids because there is NOTHING the solenoids can do that can prevent it from moving forward.
Mark, I truly appreciate your knowledge and experience as well as your time. You are a great asset to our Ford community.
A little more help please. Would burnt clutches fail all of a sudden, would the fluid then smell burnt? I have not investigated fluid smell, but I will in the morning. Burnt clutches would indicate needing a transmission rebuild or replacement? Would the feed bolts effect both forward and backward movement? This happened a year ago and the resolve, by a Ford dealership at that time was a shorted solenoid pack.
Sorry for all the questions but I like to learn about my vehicles and I don't give them up easily. My F350 has been with me for 16 years and I have two BMW's that have been with me for 30 and 40 years respectively. I love my Ford's and hope they will be respected after my passing.

Usually, but not always.

Yes, either one.

No, just forward.

Maybe that's what they told you, but that is NOT how they fixed no forward. There is no way that any failure mode of the shift solenoids can cause no forward. It's impossible.
Again, thank you for your direct and specific reply. That gives me a better understanding of how to move forward with this repair on my vehicle. I will investigate some more and will most likely move away from the shop which replaced my solenoid pack which could not have been my problem, for a pricey number.
It is a shame that we live in a world where honesty is so hard to find. Feed bolts are a relatively easy thing to check.
I will post again after some more crawling under the vehicle.
