Driving home tonight and truck downshifts from 3rd to 2nd. Stop at redlight and take off, 1st is normal, 1-2 shift is normal. Wont go into 3rd until it redlines and I havent got it to go into 4th. So when I get to the house I try reverse and its not there. I guess I need to get options on fixing and opinions on whats wrong. Truck has 185k on it. See sig for other mods. Thanks.
Does the fluid smell burnt?? Sounds to me like it's time for a trip to BTS. Or SunCoast, since you're in FL (they're over in Ft. Walton Beach). Check 'em out: http://www.suncoastconverters.com/fo...d_product.html
You've got a problem with the direct clutch. It's on in 3rd, 4th, and reverse. It could be a failing seal that works intermittently. The trans is going to need a rebuild.
Recently had the same problem. Center support bearing came apart and found pieces of its bearing cage on magnet in trans pan. The intermediate and direct clutch drums are supported by this bearing. It caused the same weird shifting and temporary loss of reverse. Second gear shift did also feel soft. Did a complete rebuild myself and upgraded the clutch packs and torque converter. Shifts great now.
One thing to try, is to return your truck to stock. Drive it, and see what it does........... Mine did that too, and just before i took it in to get rebuilt i turned it back to stock, and then my reverse and od came back, and didnt have to redline in second to get third.
I towed it (with an 89 cummins dually) to a guy about 50 miles away who is a reputable transmission guy and he does the race transmissions for my friends racecar. He also has an early 99 7.3 and he is gonna do it all for $2150. Billet triple disk converter, hardened input shaft, upgraded clutches and sprags, steel 6 planet gearsets and a reworked valvebody. Plus I have heard he is the best in the area. He said I will be amazed at how much better the new converter will perform. Looks like I can go with some power adders now.
