I have a 1999 F-150 4.6L 4R70W transmission. For a while now it has had an odd shift scenario on 2-3, I'll try to describe it. If I accelerate gently the 2-3 shift will rev slightly while shifting and kind of bounce... I can't describe it accurately. If I accurate moderately it seems to shift fine. If I accelerate with wide open throttle it will shift just fine... BUT if you are wide open throttle and left off the gas above 3k rpm it sort of drops into neutral instead of doing the 2-3 shift. If this happens you have to let completely off the gas and coast a few seconds and it will go into gear.
Recently the truck has given me the P0782 code. I have never done any transmission work before but am reasonably capable of turning a wrench. Is there any chance this is the shift solenoid? It looks pretty straight forward to replace. What do ya'll think? I would love a decent write up on how to perform this repair.
There is almost a zero chance that this is the shift solenoid. If there was a problem with the shift solenoid you would have a code for the shift solenoid. This is due to a problem in the direct clutch. The trans needs to come out and get torn down to find the problem. I'm betting on a worn out clutch and/or a damaged seal in the direct clutch.
Ahh bummer, thats way beyond my skill set. How safe am I to pull my 17 foot boat with the truck? Total weight of everything boat gassed up tackle and humans is less than 2,200 pounds. Will the problem slowly get worse or will I be facing a sudden catastrophic failure?
How is the 4-3 downshift? That reapplies the direct clutch upon the downshift.
Trans is 25 years old and the forward and direct clutches take a beating due to the clutch application pattern on the 70W. Especially in an out of OD in city traffic.
Really it is a pretty small trans and easy to rebuild. Grab an ATSG book and read up. It is also full of diag info.
I guess you might be able to nurse it around. Keep it out of OD for sure.
All of the downshifts are great, no problems there.
I appreciate your confidence in me but I won’t be dropping it. I was seduced by the idea of being able to drop the pan and replace a solenoid but that doesn’t sound like it’s the problem.
