1996 E350 based 22 feet Class C RV , ( 7,5L / E4OD )
We are stranded near Richland Missouri
We were driving on rte 44 eastbound when the transmission started to go up in temp , fluctuating from 185-210
suddenly blue smoke all over
barely had time to get off the exit that was a mille away ,,,,,
stopped at a small truck stop ( oasis travel plaza )
shut the engine , looked under , tranny is leaking badly from around torque converter area
let it cool down ,
removed the rubber plug under the bellhousing , checked the t/c drain plug , removed the protector plate ,cleaned all area ,
, added 5 qts of oil , started the engine , almost instantly it started to leak from what seems to be behind torque converter
could it be just the torque converter seal ???
never saw that before , but if anyone here had this problem ,Ill rely on it !
Îm car mechanic by trade , but on vacation , dont have all the tools in the RV
what to do ?
Yes, it is most likely the torque converter seal. When replacing this seal you should also replace the bushing behind the seal. There is an aftermarket seal made from Viton that is MUCH better than the factory seal.
As you probably know the trans needs to come out to replace this seal.

thanks Mark , I rely on your knowledge 🤗
my big concern is
did the tranny suffered ?
should I just get the seal changed or should I get it rebuilted ?
at home I would do the seal easy ,I have all the tooling ( mechanic for 40 years )
but being on a roadtrip , I have to get a shop to do the job $$$
Chances are it isn't damaged. If the trans was working well up to this point I would change the seal and bushing, not rebuild it.
when it started leaking , huge smoke because of exhaut header Y pipe passes under bellhousing ,I ran about 3 miles to get out of highway , when it started slipping, I stopped immediately
still think I should do the seal only ?
thanks 🤗
Viton® is a specific brand of Fluorocarbon (FKM) and is a registered trademark of The Chemours Company. This synthetic rubber polymer is commonly used in o-ring applications for aircraft engines, automotive fuel handling systems and other applications requiring high temperatures and low compression set.
Mark,
we are home now , finally after two full weeks in a truck stop
I tried to move the RV , woulndt move at all ( oil level full )
With your knowledge, would you think that it.s worth rebuilding it ( not too much damage inside beside regular rebuild kit ) or should I find another one and rebuild that one ?
Thanks
Dan
It depends on what the internals look like. You need to open it up to see if it's worth rebuilding. It could be a fairly minor failure, or it could be junk inside.
